Firstly was a little surprised to be told, in response to a HelpDesk ticket, that TCH provides "minimal" support for Mailman seeing as it boasts unlimited mailing lists etc. Seems several people have had problems with posts not actually being sent even though they appear in the archives because Mailman has fallen over on the server. But this is not really about that issue.

I maintain several closed mailing lists to enable members and other interested parties connected to a diving club to communicate with each other. After a bit of research and experimentation I managed to set up an "umbrella list" structure to avoid having to subscribe individuals to several different lists.

Basic structure is as follows:

3 standard closed lists - bsacs@, locals@ and others@

1 members@ "umbrella" list that sends mails to locals@ and bsacs@ - we have two classes of members and there could be postings that apply to one or the other or to all members.

1 mantas@ "umbrella" list that sends mails to others@ and to the members@ umbrella list.

This took quite a lot of fiddling and I will not go into all the details here, but if anyone is interested I could describe exactly what needs to be done.

The main problem is that the umbrella lists do not recognise subscibers to the sublists and so will hold posts for moderation unless they are added to "accept posts from these non-members" in the Sender filters. Currently you have to have to add the subsribers individually, which is a pain.

I then came across a patch that will allow you to add the wildcard "@sublist" to the Sender filter which would simplify things greatly.

Contacted TCH to see if they would install this and hit a brick wall.

Of course I understand there may be technical issues with this and also that many clients share the servers, but I was wondering how many others out there use umbrella lists in the way I do, or would like to.

Seems to me that installing this patch, if it works of course, would be a significant improvement to the functionality of Mailman and something TCH could boast about!

DadaMail has been mentioned but am not sure it will do the same thing. Is anyone using Dada in this way?

Anybody else got a view on this?

Hi Rob,

Welcome to the forums :thumbup1:

To maintain server reliability, and effectiveness, we keep all our shared servers to the same specification hence why we could not install a specific patch onto your server.

Mailman is not something we maintain, it is something that cpanel maintain, as part of cpanel.

There are a number of email scripts which I think will do what you are after, and also spread the load of sending emails over time. You could check somewhere like hotscripts.com or there might be someone along here soon, who has suggestions.

As to if dadamail allows for setting up group of lists in the way you describe, I'm not sure. You could possibly to it with forwards though.

Of course all your servers need to be kept to the same specification. Why not install the patch on all your servers then? I would imagine this would not compromise existing mailing lists clients have with Mailman.

Perhaps you misunderstood Andy's post. Mailman is part of cPanel. When cPanel pushes another update every server would have to have the patch applied again.

Good answer!! Cannot expect you to go through all that. The improvement is apparently on the list of includes for next version of Mailman so maybe one day it will arrive as part of a cpanel update? Thanks for your patience and taking the time to respond.
