Regarding Bittorrent

Well, I would like to set up a BitTorrent site because our current host couldn't handle our site's activity on the database. Understandibly, this is a concern for you as well.

 

My question is, if I were to purchase one of the better shared hosting packages, would that entitle me to more activity on the database? For example, the bandwidth and storage space offered through the cheapest package is really plenty to handle our traffic needs, but I would get the next best package if it would avoid unfairly burdening your database.

 

For some context, our community right now has about 1600 members on the site, although there are really only about 200 active ones. There were a sum total of about 280 seeders and leechers active at once during the time when we had to suspend it. Our bandwidth is about 200MB per day on average.

Fairly active bittorrent trackers are not very shared host friendly because they tend to create a large number of database connections. If you are already having problems with db activity on a shared host elsewhere, we couldn't guarantee you wouldn't have the same issue here (or for that matter at any shared hosting site).

 

Our various package configurations are primarily for additional bandwidth and diskspace, not really additional CPU and database time (unless you go dedicated of course at which you can knock yourself out with processing).

Bittorrents are allowed on our servers.

 

However of like Mike has indicated there are issues with using bit torrents on shared servers. The trackers that are involved with bit torrents utilize a lot of SQL, and therefore have caused many problems in the past with shared accounts. This is not to say that you cannot host such, you just need to be aware of the issues.
