Was trying to install eZ Publish CMS on one of the sites I have hosted at TCH, but it seems I need access to change permissions and I don't think that is gonna happen from what I can tell.

What CMS systems are TCH approved and install friendly?

Thanks :thumbup1:

TCH doesn't 'approve' scripts nor maintain such a list. Some scripts cannot be run on your account because they require root access to the server, or access to directories outside of your account. A few other scripts have been banned because they consume excessive resources or do inappropriate things. Beyond that, you'd just need to look at the script's requirements and see if what's installed on the TCH server meets them.

I'm not really up on what various CMS scripts are available, but whether one is 'install friendly' or not is in the eye of the installer, if you ask me. :thumbup1:

Yes well the eye of this installer is seriously code deficient! LOL But I am willing to try and learn.

What CMS scripts (to your knowledge) have been banned?

The CMS packages I am now investigating are:

WordPress

Drupal

Nucleus CMS

Typo3 (this is the one I am leaning towards at the moment)

CivicSpace

If anyone reads this and has any experience with these, please feel free to chime in.

The needs of the site are to establish a music artist site that has a lot of interaction, forums, blog (news from the artist type blog), contact form, a place for discography and sound samples, image gallery, and its very important that the CMS is easily skinnable.

On further reading, Typo3 looks incredibly difficult to skin and the documentation is very hard to follow.

Argh!!!!!! :thumbup1:

Wordpress is a snap to install. We even have instructions on the help site.

I downloaded that today. Will maybe try it out and see what it's all about.

How easy is it to skin? Any experience doing that?

I'm not sure what your looking for in features but WordPress is a good option and the themes are fairly easy.

However, if you are looking for something that supports members WordPress would not be my first choice.

Sorry, I just read what you are looking for. :flex:

If you dont mind the cost, you can accomplish all of what you want with these forums and the addons they offer. Skinning them is a litle more work though.

I've been playing with WordPress and I'm not sure that is the platform for me.

Invision has a few products, but the cost is too much and again, not exactly what fits the bill from what I am reading.

And I won't lie, it's DIY with no budget, so that is somehting I have to keep in mind for the design.

On the low end of user features I would want to emulate something like this: www . adamaworld .com

On the absolute 'I wish I could do this' end would be something like this: www . blackeyedpeas .com

The BEP type site probably is not doable within my limited skill set and $0 budget, but what I love about it is:

1.) Navigation System: I really would like to find some kind of CMS that would allow me to use some kind of graphic (maybe not tabs per se, but some kind of rollover graphic) but then that had the subnavigation rollover type text like you see below the tabs. Ideally would like to include the graphic main navigation button within the masthead graphic and not have the main image masthead seperated from the navigation sytem. I am not sure if this is achieveable or not.

2.) Users Access: Users have to log in to see certain site features (I am assuming these are called 'modules'?)

3.) Photo Gallery: Integrated Photo gallery with users having the ability to upload images

4.) Message Board

5.) Chat

I could probably scale things down somewhat and use some kind of CMS to deliver the "home" page content that has some kind of 'short version news' on it that goes to a more detailed article when a link is clicked (see www. adamaworld .com for an example). Then I could use a regular HTML design for the rest of the site and incorporate something like a Coppermine Gallery, PHP BB Board, Chat program (basically seperate parts to create the whole site). I don't mind doing that. I am just not sure how to strip down something like MT to make it work only on the home page and news page.

There is another option, and that is something similar to what I see going on on this site:

www. aswespeak .net/

www. aswespeak .net/news

What I like about this site is that the design is stylish, nice and tight and the news section acts how I would like. Basically it has 5 recent news items listed, but there is an "Archive" with all older news postings. Is this still a Blog/CMS doing that? Or is it something else?

The aesthetics of the design are really important with a music site in terms of marketing. It has to look really eye catching.

Another thing that is important is the ability to DISABLE the 'comment' feature on the site. I don't want anyone but the site admin and approved users to be able to post any news or make comments.

...Yes and I would also like Rome served to me on a platter.... ha ha

You know me... always with the ideas bigger than my skillset.... jump into the fire I say! LOL ;)

In an attempt to clarify the basic type of site I am going for, please check out these sites:

www. ellis-music .com/news/

www. grooveaddiction .net/news/

www. masqued .net/open/site.php?z=news

www. thejulianatheory .com (minus the flash)

www. sullivancares .com/ (I do like the embedded Flash music player in the Masthead on this one tho)

It seems most of these sites employ some kind of CMS. What kind I still have yet to determine.

Anyone have any ideas how this type of site is achieved?

I haven´t checked each page on the url´s provided but I think all this can be done by integrating all kinds of scripts (no cms needed that is).

If taking the news sections for example, 2 that I have used are www.czaries.net/scripts/czarnews.php and cutephp.com/cutenews/

So with combinations of scripts found on hotscripts.com etc you can do a site like this. :)

Thomas! Wow, I can't thank you enough for mentioning those scripts to me! Those are wonderful and really I think will do the trick for what I am looking to achieve. You have been so helpful. :) :clapping: :clapping:

You´re welcome. :)

CuteNews was wonderful to work with. But they changed things in their license so I dont use that anymore. But if you can live with their license, I´d say go for that one.

Czarnews has a little better license in my opinion so I use that on http://gullungarna.com/eng/ if you want to see it.

I have just recently started to use it, so there may be configuration options that I haven´t found so far which may make it look even better. :clapping:

That site is great Thomas! I think both Czarnews and CuteNews are great. I liked some of the features of CuteNews better but have downloaded both to test them out.

What did CuteNews change in their license?

I have also found many other scripts over at Hotscripts that I think I will use!

Primarily they changed it so it now must have a powered by line saying "Content Management Powered by CuteNews", unless you pay for it.

I definately dont mind "powered by lines", but since on my site the CuteNews only handled my news and not all the content, I wanted that line changed. I brought it up in their forum with not so good results.

I would have accept it if had said powered by CuteNews, but now it don´t. :)

OH wow. I wonder why they said 'content management'? That's a bit silly considering the script isn't managing all the content, as you say.

It's not too steep to buy the license though. I think if it works out I might see if I can get the license for it.

But I still have to test it out more.
