mike
Hey ya'll, I hope this is the right forum for this: I have a dell 1100 inspiron, warranty expired, and when it boots it beeps about 24 times, stops and beeps for alot more than that. Funny thing is then it goes on to windows. ( xp home ) Now, no matter what icon you click it jumps to the last one at the bottom of the screen. Also if I try to type something in the run window, it scrolls through all the previous and stops at the bottom. I can get to and run programs from the start menu, but any time you want to pick something it jumps to the end. Almost like an arrow key or tab key was stuck. I hooked up a usb keyboard but get the same problem. The onboard keyboard stays functional so I am not sure maybe that keyboard is the problem; yet there's no way to disable it in setup. Dell says plugging in the external keyboard disables the onboard, but that is NOT what's happening. Can't seem to find a list of beep codes anywhere either. thanks for any help. mike
MikeJ
My suspicion is that it is your keyboard. And plugging in an external one does NOT disable the onboard keyboard. (I have a Dell XPS Gen2, which is really just a beefy Inspiron).
Madmanmcp
Mike, 24 beeps is way to many for it to be an error code type of beep. I think its a stuck key or something stuck under the keys. If its an old laptop your only choices are to replace the keyboard or toss it if you can't clean it. You might be able to find a cheap one to use the parts from on ebay. mike
YEp. Keyboard is what I think too. Glad to have the confirmations. Thanks guys. I will check on price of new keyboard. I'll bet that's a beaut to change out. thanks
Madmanmcp
MIke, see if this place has a replacement for you h_tp://www.bay-wolf.com/parts_insp1100.htm I'll bet that's a beaut to change out. Actually I think the keyboard might be the easiest part to replace. If you can get the cover off its right on top and its a simple connection via a cable. Good luck. stevevan
At the least, all it could need is a good cleaning!
mike
I sprayed some keyboard cleaner in there and it seemed to help some but.....! So, without a service manual, I would hope that when I take the cover off that it doesn't just start dropping parts right? thanks for the link, Madman, I will check that out asap. mike
thanks again for the link, Madman I took baywolf's link to dell parts and got the keyboard on the way for 14.95 ( ended up getting 512 ram for it too. ) thanks.
TCH-Bruce
I would have held off on the ram until I was sure I could get it booted. But that's just me.

As long as you are careful! Just don't start pounding on the table when you're doing it! Hope it all works out ok for you.
MikeJ
So, without a service manual, I would hope that when I take the cover off that it doesn't just start dropping parts right? Just pull up a service manual: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/syst...en/sm/index.htm It includes the instructions for removing and reinstalling the keyboard. mike
Bruce - the laptop boots up just fine. It just had a key sticking and once I got that unstuck it boots up and runs fine. But..... it NEEDS a new keyboard and the ram won't hurt at all. Thanks for the headsup on the manual, MIke; I'm headed there now. thanks.
