xXAlmightyBobXx Posted August 29, 2005 Posted August 29, 2005 (edited) My question is simple: Can i buy a domain name from this site (or any other) but not host it on this site? I need to own the name (which is why im here, correct if wrong) but i will host the web-page on a dedicated computer at my house. Can i only buy or do i have to host it here too? Or, can i buy, host, and then quit and take my name with me??? Please help... im new at this !!! Thanks (not to be meen, i love the site!!! it's just my dad is going to buy a dedicated computer and it is hard for a High School student to get the $$$ needed to host it on any kind of good, helpfull server.) TCH-Rob Posted August 29, 2005 Posted August 29, 2005 Sure you can. Get whatever name you want, just point it to the IP of the computer at your house or use a DNS service to point it there. It is your domain name, do what you want with it. Quote

stevevan Posted August 29, 2005 Posted August 29, 2005 Welcome to the forums! The domain name is yours to do with as you want. Although, look over our hosting plans. I'm sure there's one that a high school student could afford. Perhaps the best feature is that you won't have to worry as much about the security of the box as our fantastic technicians keep a tight control on things like that! Quote
Madmanmcp Posted August 29, 2005 Posted August 29, 2005 (edited) it's just my dad is going to buy a dedicated computer and it is hard for a High School student to get the $$$ needed to host it on any kind of good, helpfull server. I would do a cost comparison with your dad and I think you will be surprised. To purchase a domain is $10.95 and a Starter Plan is $5 so the cost to host a domain here is going to run around $70 a year. Can your dad buy a Server, purchase the Web hosting software and the bandwidth for less than that? There is a lot that goes into making a website work and TCH takes care of all the backend work for you for very little money. Good luck with whatever route you take. stevevan Posted August 29, 2005 Posted August 29, 2005 As an afterthought...many ISP's frown on hosting a server. You might want to check with your service provider first rather than risk having your service cut off. Quote
Madmanmcp Posted August 29, 2005 Posted August 29, 2005 Thanks Steve, I was also going to mention that point but forgot. There is a lot more to a website than just buying a server and writing the html code. Quote
xXAlmightyBobXx Posted August 29, 2005 Author Posted August 29, 2005 Thanks so much!!! I will definatly have to check with the ISP about the bandwidth, im not sure he (my dad) checked that. (Although, im not sure what our set-up is. He does a LOT of work from home (for SAIC) sending encripted stuff back and forth and reciving huge files that take all day. I will look into it.) About the cash issue: I will look over the plans for sure, i must have miss-read the prises (i was thinking hundreds). I do a lot of paintball with my school band (nothing official, just recriational) and that, in addition to the XBox and XBox Live (which is where i got xXAlmightyBobXx, if anyone has Live) drains almost all of may cash. I also take periodic trips to Germany, and i must pay 1/2 my way (yay mom being nice). Thanks again, i think im about as green as they come as far as inter-web... net... things... IP's... whatever... go. Thanks again!!! PS- this is the only place i could find that actually gives you the domain you buy!!! all the others just say "we will keep rights of the name to... uuu... help with many things... uuu... you can't understand." TCH-Don Posted August 29, 2005 Posted August 29, 2005 Welcome to the forums, xXAlmightyBobXx They are right, almost all ISp's forbid hosting a home server through them and if found out will terminate your account. Good luck with whichever route you go. Quote
abinidi Posted August 29, 2005 Posted August 29, 2005 Welcome to the forums! I know what you mean about registrars wanting to keep control of the domain for themselves! You don't need to worry about that with TCH. When you are looking at the virtual account plans, remember that you can get a hosting account for less than four dollars a month ($3.67), if you use the annual billing option. When you consider the time you would spend every month trying to keep your home server up to date, I think you'll soon realize that TCH accounts are pretty darn inexpensive! Especially with the level of service you get and the quality of the servers! So, as stated above, you aren't required to host at TCH. However, if I really cared about keeping a site up and running, I wouldn't go anywhere else--not even my own box! Quote
hooksie Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 If I'm getting my prices right here, its probably more expensive to have a server at your house, as well as much more annoying. A good connection to the internet for a server can run you a few hundred bucks easy every month. Also, the fact that TCH gives you cpanel to manage your acount, which again if I recal correctly, costs about a few thousand bucks for your own liscense. And then theres a fact that TCH manages the server your on, and will fix it very quickly if something ever goes wrong. If you had your own server and something went wrong, then it'd need to wait for you to get back online or be reset or something. With TCH if there was for example a mySQL outage then they'd restart things themselves very quickly. Also, I'm a high school student as well, and this is by far the best host I've ever had, out of a few. Quote
