Dear TCH support Team,

Can you please kindly download the version 2.0.17 of phpBB to Cpanel? (Current version in Cpanel is 2.0.15)

Thank you in advance,

Rohan

Rohan, another thing you should consider is installing updates manually. Sometimes cpanel is far behind on their updates. And I know from experience phpBB is extremely easy to update (even install) manually. Just a thought.

I thought of doing this, but was not sure how to do it. Can I directly download these files to my phpBB directory in the server or should I first download the file to my PC and then upload it to the server.

Is it possible to unzip the file in the sever?

While it is possible to unzip the file on the server, I find the following procedure the easiest:

1) Download the "Changed Files Only" version of phpBB.

2) Open in your favorite .ZIP program

3) You'll notice a few other zips inside. They will be named things such as "2.0.16_to_2.0.17.zip". Open the one that starts with the version number you currently have.

4) Extract it to a directory on your local computer.

5) Upload it to the directory you keep phpbb in on your server using your favorite FTP program (overwrite all files, but keep in mind if you've made any modifications you'll have to re-do those if they are overwritten).

6) In the main .ZIP file, there should be a file called "update_to_latest.php" (probably in the "install" directory). Create an "install" directory in the phpbb directory on the server, and upload that file to the install directory.

7) In your web browser, navigate to that file (ie "http://www.mytchdomain.com/forums/install/update_to_latest.php"). ** NOTE: before doing this, you may want to make a backup of your phpbb database using cpanel.

8) After the update_to_latest.php file has run, delete the "install" directory.

9) Everything is up to date!

You might also want to search on the phpBB site. I believe they have a User Guide, FAQ, tutorials, and a Knowledge Base. (It really is a piece of cake!)

To add to all the other good points on upgrading phpBB, Acyd Burn (the author of the Attachment MOD) normally releases "Manual" upgrade instructions. If you have allot of MODs installed, this is the best way to go. Just download his file, follow his instructions and run the update script.

When you log into your phpbb goto the bottom of the page

and click goto adminstration page

Then you will see Version Information

showing

Your installation is up to date, no updates are available for your version of phpBB.

and below that

Also when upgrading be sure to switch back to the sub-silver theme first

under General Admin > configuration Default Style.

Many thanks, Don!

Was a little (actually- alot  ) worried about what the upgrade would do to my Hebrew language forum which is heavily modified to read from right to left and many other associated difficulties- but all appears to still work.

Appreciate the advice.

Exactly! I forgot to switch the style and lost at least two weeks of work in personalized mods :no2:

I hate myself when l don't look at the instructions carefully!!!

Excellent link - quickly updated from 2.0.15 to 2.0.16 and then 2.0.17 without losing any customisation - thanks :no2:
