Alright! I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask these questions - and if it isn't, please feel free to kick me to somewhere that is the correct place...

First off, disclaimer - I am a complete computer idiot (okay, I do know CSS & HTML, and I can operate my DreamWeaver and PS) who woke up one day and said to herself, 'hey, you've been mod-ing websites for so long, why not START one...', so forgive me if some of my questions are plain obvious to the ones who are technically blessed.

1. I CAN'T CONNECT TO MY FTP ACCT!

I've taken into consideration that my URL has not fully propaganded (I do believe I signed up just less than 24 hours ago), and so, I used that string of numbers (IP?) that the Welcome Email provided... However, my lovely FTP client, who connects perfectly well to a site I co-run, displays a time-out message when I try to connect to that IP(?) TCH provided in the email.

2. PLEASE explain to me about this domain parking business...

I currently own [domain].com and [domain].org. Don't ask me why I have both - people are overgenerous with their URL vouchers. I registered with TCH with [domain].com and now, I want to to make [domain].org point to [domain].com

Hint: Domains must be registered with a valid registrar before they can be parked. In addition, they will not be functional unless they are configured to point to our DNS servers.

Can someone kindly explain what the emphasised words mean? And, umm, it would be sweet if that kind soul could include instructions about how to go about doing it...

ETA: I tried to put in a domain but got this...

Sorry, you are not allowed to add any more than ( 0 ) parked domains!
However, before I signed up, I heard this...
Yes, you can park as many domains as you wish, as long as they point to and use the same content.

???

3. So, I've coded out my site - the index page, at least - into a html file already. How do I get it up onto the net? Where do I upload the file too?

That's about all... for now... Thanks :)

Hello Anya,

I have no answer for number 1. May I ask what ftp program you use. It might help those that knows ftp better, to understand what the problem is.

2. PLEASE explain to me about this domain parking business...
If you want to park a domain on the other, please do the following:

1) Go to the registrar that you registrered your domain with and ask them to point that domain to the nameservers that are listed in your welcome email for your hosting account.

2) Submit a ticket to the TCH techs and ask them to park the domain on your account.

Thats should be all you need to do.

3. So, I've coded out my site - the index page, at least - into a html file already. How do I get it up onto the net? Where do I upload the file too?

All html files that you want to publish must be published inside the public_html folder.

This you can do in a variety of ways. Either with a ftp program, cpanels filemanager and I believe that many web-programs have some sort of ftp built in already too.

Alright! Another "I should have known" question!

Since I did not get my domains from TCH, I should change my nameservers to the DNS pointers to the ones in my welcome email right? The place I got my domains from provide 3 potential name servers, the email only provided two... Do I:

1) fill in two blanks and leave the last one BLANK

OR

2) fill in the two blanks and leave the last one as filled in by my domain provider???

Thanks...

Correct.

1) fill in two blanks and leave the last one BLANK

Yes, fill in two and leave the third blank.

Hope this helps. :P

Yes fill in the first two with the DNS servers you got in your welcome email, and leave the third blank.

Edit: It appears Thomas replied while I was typing... I hate mornings lol.

Don't forget that after you make the change that it can take up to 72 hours for that change to complete. Often it is much faster than that but be prepared, if your luck is anything like mine it can take a while.

Hmm... I can wait. :P

Anyway, I've successfully uploaded an image file into the public_html/images/ folder just... and when I click on the link I get a FORBIDDEN message... Is this happening because the domain hasn't propaganded or because I uploaded it to the wrong folder or... some other weird techie reason that I can't think of???

That's possible...especially if the link has the URL in it. But to be on the safe side, make sure you've coded the correct directory, file, etc.

ALRIGHTY! My site has propagated! Whee!

Now... I've uploaded a html file into my /public_html folder... HOW now do I get that webpage to show when someone goes to [mydomain].com???

Hi Anya,

Your 'home page' of your web site (the page that visitors first see when they go to your site) is to be named index.html - so yes, you should rename the page.
