Hello to all,

New Member, first post and new to all of this.

I just recently bought a domain name though TCH and planned on buying a starter account to host my site but now I realize I may want to do more than I originally thought.

I've learned that I may want to try doing some vb.net, asp.net, dotnetnuke sites just to learn about everything I can. I now realize that TCH doesn't support asp. Also, I am thinking about hosting my own site from a second computer (XP Pro with SSI) and my cable connection.

Is there a way to forward my domain to my rarely changing IP address?

I will worry about the dynamic IP Address on my own.

Thank you kindly,

Kevin

Welcome to the forum Kevin :thumbup1:

you are correct no .asp

but I think you may find php easier.

As to hosting a site on your computer via a cable connection,

I think you will find that may be a violation of your agreement with your cable company,

check with them first or look on their support site.

I know that Charter will terminate any one hosting a web site through their cable connection.

Thanks all for the kind reception.

I will have to give them a call but I do know other people who use Time Warner's Roadrunner service to host small, low traffic, all legal, personal websites similar to the one I plan on running. I thought I saw a place to forward my domain to another web address but I wasn't sure If I could use an IP address.

I think you better double check with road runner. I don't think they allow it. If your friend is doing it and gets caught he'll be terminated.

Welcome to the forums! Most high speed access ISP's don't allow hosting. However, they also don't allow in-home networking without having you pay for it, but many people do it anyway. You probably could do it, but with the great prices at TCH, why? (Besides, you get a lot more bang for the buck with TCH!) If you are wanting to learn about web hosting, you might want to think about setting up a "test server" to test out different designs, scripts, etc.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Unfortunately no one has answered my question as far as whether I can forward my domain name to an IP address or not.

I agree TCH seems to have a great service at a great price however it doesn’t have the option of ASP. I understand PHP may be easier and is supported by TCH however I have specific reasons for wanting to develop with ASP.NET. Indeed I may setup a “test server” just for the sake of learning but it would be nice if I could have it online so I could get feedback from friends and family as I develop.

Thanks,

Kevin

If you're serious about doing this (and risking your high-speed connection at home if your ISP finds out), try doing a google search for dynamic IP forwarding. Several sites came up that might be worth checking into.

I personally have never done that, so I can't answer you specifically on how to do it. Sorry!
