stevevan Posted May 10, 2005 Posted May 10, 2005 Found this story in USA Today about the sportsmanship of the Swedish National Hockey team during the International Hockey World Championships. After hearing and reading about all the problems with players in professional AND youth sports, this story shows that sportsmanship is not dead. And ironically, it comes from perhaps one of the most physical sports that are played today. Sporting Swedes: The Swedes showed that sportsmanship is alive at the world championships when they declined to file a midgame protest that could have led to a forfeit victory against Canada because of a technicality. Sweden won the game 5-4 Saturday, but in the first period the Swedes were informed that Canada had failed to list Scott Walker on their official lineup sheet. The Swedes said they wouldn't protest the game. Walker was on the ice for a goal against, and statisticians caught the mistake when they tried to give him a minus and saw he wasn't on the scoresheet. The Canadians said they submitted what they thought was the correct lineup form and that something was lost in the translation. According to IIHF spokesman Szymon Szemberg, the Swedes made the same mistake at last year's tournament and the opponent also opted against a protest. Thomas, you should be proud. Your national team showed the world what sportsmanship is all about. Quote
Head Guru Posted May 10, 2005 Posted May 10, 2005 It was a most excellent game. Agreed Thomas is proud I Bet. Although the Canadians are a great team and deserve respect as well. Bill Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted May 10, 2005 Posted May 10, 2005 After reading this, yes I am. However, I have very little interest in any sport, maybe a I see the final in some tournament but that´s about it, so I didn´t know this. Now, if we just could win against Latvia tonight... Quote
