Gidday,

I have a forum on my website that was put there through the Cpanel.

In the Administration part there are two panels, One says to create new Forum and the other says: Create new Category.

What exactly is a category and why should I use it if at all.

Cheers

Hi,

If we look at this forum, "TotalChoice Hosting Family" is the category and "Open discussion" is the forum.

And I believe that no matter which forum (IPB, phpbb, SMF... ) you use, you will need to place a forum inside a category (but I can be wrong on this one).

Thomas is correct.

You create categories

and then put forums inside of the categories.

You may only need the original category

or you may want to separate forums into different areas (categories) for organization.

The forum you posted in, Scripting Talk

is in the category Scripting Central

Gidday,

O.K. then, thanks mates.

Now from that, here comes another question.

Can I reorganise my forums now, as I had only createdforums and no categories. So can I now create categories and place my existing forums into them to do a total reorganization?

I hope you know what I mean.

Cheers

Hi Jack,

If you had some specific's, we could help out with specific answers

What forum script are you using, and do you have a URL we could see?

All forums I know of, require at least one category, then you can have multiple forums under that category, then in that forum, multiple topics.

You can then create new categories, and move existing forums into the new category.

Thanks.

The URL is http://www.kiwicraft.com/Forum/

I now see it is all under one category.

If I create new categories, how do I move these forums into the diferent forums that I would have set up?

Cheers

Hi kiwicra,

That sure help's knowing what forum you are using

When you are logged in as an admin, and viewing a forum (not the main index page), on the very bottom right of a page, you will see a 'You can moderate this forum' link. Clicking there will get you into the moving of forums into different categories.
