When I went to "default address maintenance" in the Mail section of Cpanel, it said:

All unrouted mail for will be sent to: johnstonz.net: johnsto

winstonsale.johnstonz.net: johnsto

I understand the underlined portion, but what does the boldfaced (winstonsale.johnstonz.net) portion mean. Why is my subdomain mentioned there?

If you go to the Change Default Address link you can see that you can set up a default address for each sundomain via the drop down box. The Bold section in the information screen is just letting you know where the default is for mail sent to your subdomain.

I have several subdomains set up and so the default addresses vary depending on which one it is. If you were to set up an email address of subdomain@yoursite.com and set it as the default for that subdomain, all mail sent to anyone@subdomain.yoursite.com would go to that account.
