I recently transfered my companies hosting and email services over to TotalChoice. While we have not had any problems with outages and other things that might plague a small company like ours, the immediate increase in spam is something that I am being forced to address. In the few days since the switchover, all five of us in the company have been recieving ever increasing amounts of spam. I have activated spam assasian and so we are it is at least catching it with minimal mismatches. I have not yet set it to go to a spam box as we are still making sure it is not marking business emails as spam.

On our website the only email address listed at this point is info@ (ourdomain).com , this box is not even an active account at this point.

I have talked to everyone in the company and none have changed surfing habits since we switched over, and the increase happened right at the time we switched. One of the guys in my office has never received spam to his account as he never uses it for anything but writing and responding to clients. He recieved over 30 pieces his first day.

I guess I am looking to see if anyone else is having this problem, and if so, if there is a reason why spam would be an issue for this provider....and if not, what I could be doing wrong and how I can correct it. While Spamassasain seems great, I would like something so that new employees will not recieve 45 pieces of spam upon date of hire. Just as a side note, this is my third account with TotalChoice and I have noticed this the other accounts as well....but since this is a business account, it is something that needs to be addressed as potential client emails may be lost if we set the Spamfilter to high...

Not trying to slam a great company, just pulling my hair out and looking for some help :P

If you recently registered your domain, or even updated (renewed) it, this is most likely the source of the spam. Many spammers target new domains automatically by monitoring new registrations. AFAIK, TCH does not automatically filter email like many ISP's will.

You should also make sure that mail going to a fake/non-existing account gets :failed: - most of my spam was guesses. Failing those mesages cut my spam dow drastically.

You can do this by modifying the "catchall" in control panel. =)

I think the thing that is concerning me most is that these are not just spams going to the catch all box, which I am currently in charge of...these are emails going to specific users... ie...setup with a really standard system first name--last initial, but still....My catch all box doesn't even catch as many it seems....

and thanks to both replys so far for the amazingly fast responses :)

If you have a lot of email addresses on your site, you may want to check out this page. It encodes the email addresses so bots can't crawl through and find them in your source code. I have all of the email addresses on my site encoded through this and, while I do receive SOME spam, it is the exception rather than the rule.

Do not post your email addresses here, but go to google and enter them to see if they show up on any pages... yours or otherwise. There may be some jerk out there posting email addresses for the spammers to hit or something equally evil.
