I have a website with Cox business hosting and want to transfer it to TCH. I purchased an account with TCH last night with the understanding that TCH would handle everything and now they tell me that they cannot transfer my website because it's not "cpanel" or whatever...that I have to do it myself.

I'm NOT a website administrator, I can barely put gas in this thing and drive it and I'm sure no mechanic. What do I have to do to transfer my website from Cox to TCH? I cannot afford any 'hiccups' in the transfer. I rely on this website for my business and if my clients can't get to it then I go out of business. I need some help or will have to immediately cancel my account with TCH.

Any help on transferring my website?

That depends. You first need to ftp down all your folders from cox and upload them to TCH - making sure that any "public" pages (www accessible) are in public_html or deeper.

Then, if you have a database, you need to move that- do you have one? No point dealing with it if you don't.

You also need to make sure that all your email accounts are set up at TCH so that when you redelegate your domain, they're ready to go.

Depending how you set up your pages and scripts, you'll need to make sure that paths are accurate for the TCH servers.

How do I FTP down the folders? I'm using Front Page but when I try to "save as" to a file on my cpu, it says that I don't have enough memory but I have over half a gig of ram and over 60 gig on the HD.

What do I need to use to ftp down the folders from Cox?

You would download them using the same program you used to upload them, most likely. Then you'd upload them from your hard drive up to TCH. Since you don't have cpanel on your current site, chances are you don't have any databases to worry about.

Frontpage I can't advise on, I've never used it for more than a minute. I'd suggest a real ftp program such as SmartFTP or CuteFTP for the PC - or Transmit for the Mac.

robert - that's not true. cPanel is only one of many systems that hosts use to manage users, there are other systems, proprietary and non- that companies use. Duke could easily have many databases. =)

Gotcha. Wasn't sure as cpanel is all I'm used to... both you guys and other hosts have been cpanel. but you would know best :tchrocks:

If you are using Frontpage are the pages for your site already on your computer? Did you publish to your old host from your computer?

If so, you just need to publish the same content to TCH from Frontpage. Otherwise you will have to get an FTP program and download your current site to your machine and then FTP it back up to the TCH site.

If Duke does not know anything about transfering his site I would recommend that he hire outside help. Maybe you could run and ad on Craig's List or call a community college and see if there is someone there that could help you. Just my 2 cents.

youneverknow

Hi Duke,

First of all welcome to your extended family. :tchrocks:

May I ask which programs you surrently use to make you site and then publish it to Cox?

If we get to know what programs you use the chance that we can give you even better help are bigger. ;)

Duke,

Welcome to the family. Something to keep in mind, if you use FrontPage to publish, an FTP down and an FTP back may not leave the site working properly. Front page uses specific extensions that allow certain "features" to function properly so it needs to do the file uploading.

Chances are that if you use it to publish your site then there is a copy on your computer and you can just upload the same content here.
