Hello!

I am considering moving my domain hosting to you guys, but have a couple of questions.

I am currently hosted by PowWeb, and registered my domain through them originally. Here is my current information:

Domain Name: xxxxxx.COM (name hidden to protect the innocent :) )

Registrar: TUCOWS, INC.

Whois Server: whois.opensrs.net

Referral URL: http://www.opensrs.org

Name Server: NS2.POWWEB.COM

Name Server: NS3.POWWEB.COM

Status: ACTIVE

Updated Date: 20-feb-2003

Creation Date: 20-feb-2003

Expiration Date: 20-feb-2004

1) Is there any reason to transfer my domain to you, or can I just leave it as is? I am able to maintain it currently through OpenSRS, and have no problem with them.

2) If I leave the domain with them, will my OpenSRS name/password I use to maintain my domain information change? I didn't know if this login was valid only so long as I am with PowWeb, or if it would still work after I move my hosting.

3) When I do a WHOIS on the OpenSRS site, they show an additional line called "Registration Service Provider: PowWeb." This is not a field that I can access through the OpenSRS maintenance page. If I do not transfer my domain registration to TotalChoice, will this information remain as is or can I change in some way?

I guess what I really want to know is whether PowWeb will be involved in anyway, and to what extent your company would be other that hosting the site?

Advice?

Thanks!

Mark

Not exactly sure about the details on this, since I'm the new guru on the block, but you might find some helpful information in this thread that could help you out. :)

I'll leave this open though to any of my other fellow gurus to tackle though! Good luck!

Update!

I found this thread written by the head guru that covers having an existing domain name. Main thing that changes is when setting the DNS information, you'll have to point it towards the place you have your name right now.

1. Not unless you want to. Registrars and hosts can be two different companies.

2. Nope.. it might if you transferred your domain to TCH to be managed but as I said.. see #1.

3. That just shows who the registrar of the domain is. It would change if you moved to TCH but it won't if you leave your domain with them.

PowWeb can be involved only as a registrar or if you transfer your domain registration to TCH you can eliminate them completely. The choice is yours.

For all my domains, I had them registered at Dotster and they are now all hosted with TCH. I pay Dotster for the name and TCH for the hosting. Me personally, I'd transfer the registration to an independent 3rd party or move it to TCH. Just so they (PowWeb) couldn't "mess with you" on it. Not that they would.. but...

Hope this all makes sense and remember your mileage may vary.

Shawn
