I just installed windows XP Pro into a brand new machine (finally, after months of being without my own desktop) and I ended up with the following drives:

3 1/2 Floppy(A:)

Removeable USB Device (C:)

Removeable USB Device (D:)

Removeable USB Device (E:)

Removeable USB Device (F:)

DVD-RW Drive (G:)

Local Disk (H:)

C,D, E, and F I do not have at all and disabled via Device manager.

Part 1 - Should I have done that??

That now leaves me with:

3 1/2 Floppy(A:)

DVD-RW Drive (G:)

Local Disk (H:)

Certainly unfamiliar (even wrong) labels.

Part 2 - What should I do? Leave it with those labels?

So - long story short - I am freaking out. .... :)

I don't dare start doing anything (installing) else till I get past this.

As always - thanks much.

BTW - I put this here because the Hardware is new, not the disk. I have used this install disk before and it never gave me these results.

HYmmm, sounds rather odd to me...I thought C: could never be assigned as a removable drive. If this is a new system as you say I would wipe clean and start over.

Did you fdisk and create your partitions before you started? Is this pre-installed system or one you built from scratch?

I didn't think it would do that either.

I merely followed the prompts off the install disk letting it do the partitions, etc., just like I've done before.

I had this put together (custom) for me by a reputable company

Reboot did nothing to change things for the better.

PC was not plugged in to any network at the time of install.

I think I should start over (half expecting this to happen again)

That one's really odd! :)

As Bob said, drive C: should never be assigned to a removable drive... :)

If you have the time and patience, I'd say you could try to reinstall everything from scratch again and hope that it doesn't happen. If it does happen again, you can probably call the company that sold you the computer and ask them to help you out.

I agree, start over. Boot to the CD and find fdisk and run it and wipe out all partitions and leave an empty Hard Drive. Then reboot and let XP create the C: partition, format it and install the OS.

If this doesn't work correctly then start over again but this time YOU manually create the C: partition and format it and install the OS.

Good luck.

I'll try again.

It says

C: Partition1 [New (Raw)] 76309 MB (76309 MB free)

on 76317 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR].

and to me that doesn't look right - a lot of zeros - but I'll let it do its thing and see what happens.

Ok, I now have (after new/fresh install) :

3 1/2 Floppy (A:)

Local Disk (C:)

Removable Disk (D:)

Removable Disk (E:)

Removable Disk (F:)

Removable Disk (G:)

DVD-RW (H:)

Better, but not right? (H?)

Ok, that looks good. The USB are showing up as drives which is ok. The Drive order after the C: really doesn't matter. The CD and DVD drives can be any letters and the removable drives also.

I think you're good to go now.

Yea, I can live with that. Thanks guys.

Now all I have to do is do something about one of the fans. The company upgraded the case without asking and gave me one with a side window (err, ok) and a side fan. Well, this box is literally a desktop unit and now blows air right in my face. :(

Seems as I have 3 fans. Maybe I'll unplug it - see what happens. Or turn it (fan) around.

Update:

I unplugged the offending fan (for now) and it's running between 17 and 24 celsius (with a Pentium4) which is a lot cooler than my AMD ever ran so maybe I'm ok?

Yea the cat can turn it on when needed

I can see it now ;)

Mine can turn on the tv now :(

Seriously? ;) I'm glad my tv is out of reach...that would drive me crazy. :D

Remember on Green Acres how Arnold the pig would turn on the tv and watch it? I can't help but picture you asking your cat to turn down the tv while you have guests over.
