hotsteel Posted November 2, 2004 Posted November 2, 2004 I feel pretty confident that I can upload my site to your servers, however i am unsure how to remove it from where it is. What are the steps I need to go through, and in what order to move my site from the old host to TCH? Will people get error messages while the process is underway and the site is removed and before it's fully up to TCH? thanks for your detailed answers. I couldn't find anything addressing this on your site. Suz Quote
TCH-Andy Posted November 2, 2004 Posted November 2, 2004 Hi Suz, Welcome to the family I would copy over your site (using the IP address in your welcome mail) You can then view your new site using the IP address/~username again this link should be in your welcome email. Check that it all looks OK. You can then change your DNS settings to the name servers here. This will start the propagation process. During the next few days, people should always see a copy of your site, but some will see the old site, and some the new site. If it is a dynamic site (ie you have a forum or something else than changes) I would dissable this on the old server, with a note that the site is moving. During this period, your email will also go to either the old or the new server - so you will need to check both. Finally, after up to 72 hours, everone will be seeing your new hosr here, and you should be able to cancel your old hosting, and remove all files from it. Quote
hotsteel Posted November 2, 2004 Author Posted November 2, 2004 Thanks Andy. MAIN question: When you say copy over my site, do you mean to just upload it via ftp as I normally would do? Just restating my understanding of what you said: Then login with username and password to view? After seeing that site looks good, then change DNS settings and that will allow the site to be generated over the next day or two? thanks for your help. suz Quote
TCH-Andy Posted November 2, 2004 Posted November 2, 2004 Hi, Yes, you can upload it using FTP, as you normally would. If your old host was also using cpanel, open a ticket at the help desk, and provide us with the old username and password, and we'll try and copy the whole site for you if you like. Your statements are correct although using http://xx.xx.xx.xx/~username you should be able to view your site - there is no need for the username and password to view it. Quote
TCH-Andy Posted November 2, 2004 Posted November 2, 2004 where xx.xx.xx.xx is the IP address of your site and username is your cpanel username Quote
DWD Posted November 2, 2004 Posted November 2, 2004 "You can then change your DNS settings to the name servers here." Could you explain this as if you were talking to a 6th grader. Change exactly how? By doing exactly what? Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted November 2, 2004 Posted November 2, 2004 It means you will need to tell your domain-registrar to point your domain to ns1.totalchoicehosting.com and ns1.totalchoicehosting.com. Quote
DWD Posted November 2, 2004 Posted November 2, 2004 Thanks...that does make sense. I just wanted to make sure I didn't have to go to my current host and give them another chance to **** with me. My site has been down since last week, oh, but their sever is technically up after replacing a drive...nothing runs on it...but its up...so "green light" on there server status page. Opps...rambling, sorry. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted November 2, 2004 Posted November 2, 2004 No, the old host you can skip unless its at their place you registered your domain. Quote
