jacksdad Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 Someone called me because when they tried to email me, their email kept bouncing back. I sent them an email and told them to just reply to it. They got my email, but their reply keeps bouncing back. This same thing happened a few weeks ago, and I was hoping it was a fluke... I am getting other emails every day. They faxed me the bounced message, since they can't email it. Here is the relevant part... Subject: Undeliverable: RE: our email address Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients... The following recipient(s) could not be reached: "Pinnacle Displays' on 10/22/2004 12:17 PM There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator. <tytyty.com #5.5.0 smtp;550-Verification failed for <carla@ty***tyty.com>> note: I inserted "***" to stop spambot harvesting. I do have spam assassin on. I can't imagine life without it. Does anyone know why their email keeps bouncing and they can't get through??? Quote
TCH-Don Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 Is it just one person that gets their e-mail bounced.? Do you have the default e-mail set to bounce? I was thinking if you did, maybe they miss spelled the addy, I know not likely. Is anyone else reporting this problem to you? Quote
TCH-Rick Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 The problem is with the MX set up of the server with the domain sending to your. I ran a test on that domain and got the following: [bogus MX record - 216.199.233.186. is supposed to be a hostname, not an IP!]-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Step 1: Try connecting to the following mailserver: [ERROR; a few mailservers will connect to 216.199.233.186., but they aren't supposed to] Our servers will not accept mail from an address if the MX is set to an IP address. jacksdad Posted October 23, 2004 Author Posted October 23, 2004 Don, I have not set anything up to bounce. One person had a problem like this a few weeks ago. Then a new person had the problem yesterday, and I am quoting her error message. Rick, interesting analysis. You are saying the problem is on their end and they need to fix their configuration? I don't know anything about them. Wouldn't almost all of their emails be bouncing back, and wouldn't they have fixed the problem already if this was the case? I may send her your response and suggest she forward it to the technical person there. Thanks for the quick response. Am I correct that this is a RARE problem and there is nothing I can do about it? TCH-Rick Posted October 23, 2004 Posted October 23, 2004 I'm not sure how many emails would bounce for them. Proper MX format is to have a host name and not an IP. We have our mail servers set up to bounce any messages that have a faulty MX record, some places allow it (but since many spammers use these types of MX records it makes that problem even worse) and some mail servers are set up to just delete any messages with faulty MX records. It would be best for them to contact their technical support and have them check it for themselves using http://www.dnsreport.com/ so that it can be corrected. The problem is rare but I see it pretty regularly so it is one of the first things I check when there is a problem with a single email address bouncing. Quote
