boxturt Posted October 12, 2004 Posted October 12, 2004 The university where my daughter attends has recently outfitted the campus library as a wi-fi hotspot (I assume that's what it's called). Can anyone tell me if her laptop requires a "special" card and / or any other hardware to make her laptop work with this? She has a Dell Inspiron 1100 and it does have a pc-card slot. Thanks. Quote
LisaJill Posted October 12, 2004 Posted October 12, 2004 As long as it's g / b compatible (I'd get one that supports both to be sure) she should be fine. I have a powerbook with airport card and easily hook into Smith's wireless hotspots constantly. Other than that, I'd suggest you (or she) contact ITS (or their equivalent - Information Technology Services) and ask them. =). Quote
boxturt Posted October 12, 2004 Author Posted October 12, 2004 Thanks Lisa, I have a 802.11b that says it is wi-fi compliant (forgot I had it - also not sure why I have it ). I will have her ask an IT. Quote
borfast Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 Ty, get an Orinoco or a Senao. The Senao cards are really good, their transmission power is much better than most other cards (20-100mW, while most other cards use 11mW~50mW), meaning she'd pick up much stronger signals. I believe these cards are also sold under the EnGenius brand. Check this: http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/H...ddb27b75ead27c5 Quote
boxturt Posted October 13, 2004 Author Posted October 13, 2004 Thanks Raul. A little more costly than I had anticipated but not out of the question. Kid is going to have to come up with one heck of an argument for it though why does she really need to access the net from the library...?????? Quote
boxturt Posted October 13, 2004 Author Posted October 13, 2004 THAT was my 1000th post!! woooot What do I win??!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ...don't go there Ty................. Quote
LisaJill Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 Not to do your daughter's job - but accessing the 'net from the library can be invaluable epecially when more current information has sources online or points to a helpful resource online. Or when lecturers include online sources in their review material (which happens a fair bit in one of my classes). Plus, it can be very helpful to be able to store something online (in case you don't have the laptop) and then be able to grab it wherever. Anyway, I'd definitely go with the card, it's worth it =) Quote
boxturt Posted October 13, 2004 Author Posted October 13, 2004 I can see that....almost She also has an internet connection at her on-campus apartment so we'll see. Thank you for the input. Quote
boxturt Posted October 14, 2004 Author Posted October 14, 2004 Not meaning to bump, just following through. The system is configured for 802.11b so she's good to go I guess. I'm curious to see how well it works. Thanks again. Quote
