I have a question about domains and transfer (as in transferring the actual domain, not the website associated with it).

If the company that hosts my domain goes out of business, is there any way to transfer my domain to another company?

I read somewhere that all that is needed for a transfer is approval from the administrative contact of the domain. I am all the contacts for my domain.

So if the company goes out of business and I cannot contact anyone from there, would I still be able to transfer my domain? Or would I have to wait until it expires, then re-register it (with downtime and all that great stuff :) ).

Also, if the company goes out of business, would my domain cease to exist? I have it registered for another two years (already paid)... would my website not work if they went out of business?

(If this is the wrong forum, please move. I had no idea where to post this... and this forum was for subdomain info, so I figured I'd post it here).

In most cases if a registrar goes out of business all their clients will be transferred to another registrar. Often times it is a reseller that goes down and it will go to the parent company. WhoIS will always tell you where your domain is registered and if you are lucky you "might" get advanced notice.

There is no but, it will go to another registrar.

Edit: Let me explain. You dont really own your domain, it is more like a lease. You arent leasing it from the registrar, you are leasing it from the registry. When you purchase a domain for a year you give money to the registrar ( they are like an authorized dealer ), thye in turn give a portion of that to the registry ( the real holder of the rights to that TLD).

Take .com for example. I pay joes domain shack for ****. Joes then sends a portion of that to Verisign. If Joes goes out of business all of the information is already kept with Verisign. I dont know if it is bought or deligated to another registrar for sure but you will not be left in limbo.
