skyline Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 I run an invision site (DMBForums.com), and was wondering what all would be involved in transfering my site to TCH if I decided to make the switch. Thanks :Nerd: Quote
TCH-Rob Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 Skyline, Welcome to the forums. Don is about to answer you. And he seems to be writing a book. He might mention that if you have cPanel we might be able to make the move for you otherwise you could backup your site to your computer and restore it here. Quote
TCH-Don Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 Do you have cpanel on your current host? If so the techs may be able to transfer your site. Or if you have cpanel you can use backup > download a home directory and the backup > download databases And then you can restore them here. Other wise you will need to use MySql to export your database. Then here in cpanel > Addon Scripts you can install Invision 1.2 and then in MySql import the database . Quote
skyline Posted August 4, 2004 Author Posted August 4, 2004 I don't believe they have cpanel, but i'll look into it. Basically, though, all I would need to do is upload all of my files to my space here once I got it, and then restore the databse through phpmyadmin, correct? I just wanted to be sure there wouldn't be any hiccups along the way. The last time we did this it turned into a big mess, and we ended up restarting our forums Quote
TCH-Rob Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 That is the gist of it. I would get it all uploaded and make sure everything is working before changing name servers though. Quote
TCH-Don Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 Yes upload a copy of the forum folder edit the conf_global.php to reflect your user name here like $INFO['sql_database'] = 'cpanelname_forum database name also $INFO['sql_user'] $INFO['html_dir'] = '/home/cpanelname/public_html/pcforum/html/'; $INFO['base_dir'] = '/home/cpanelname/public_html/pcforum/'; $INFO['upload_dir']' = '/home/cpanelname/public_html/pcforum/uploads'; phpMyAdmin is located at the bottom of MySql page. If you need any help just ask we are like family here. Quote
skyline Posted August 4, 2004 Author Posted August 4, 2004 Ok, folks. I'm feeling better about this. Looking back at Rob's post... When I sign up here and get my space, I could go ahead and get my site up and running here before I ever switch name servers for my registered domain name? Would I have some other name to view my site on? As you may have noticed, I'm very experienced with Invision, but equally inexperienced with web hosting. It definitely looks as if we'll be choosing you folks for our new host. I just want to be sure I'm clear on things before I take the plunge. Thanks Quote
TCH-Rob Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 Most things can be viewed by IP/~username. You should be able to see if the move was successful but might not be able to see all options till the name server change. Quote

TCH-Don Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 (edited) There are lines in the conf_global.php that refer to your domain name you can make a temp copy to edit the domain name lines to use your ip instead until you change the DNS to point here. this way you can preview the forum. see this post on Invision Power Board Hosting Modification Help! scroll to the bottom to see examples on how To access your forum by IP address, including admin before domain propagation Edited August 8, 2004 by TCH-Don Quote
TCH-Rob Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 Invision may want some options to have the entire path (domain.com/path/to.file) instead of just /path/to.file. This can cause a page to not be displayed. I am not entirely sure of your setup or the default for Invision so some things may not display completely until you change the name servers but you should be able to tell if your move was successful before making the name change. Or you could read Dons post above. Watch him, he is sneaky. Quote
skyline Posted August 8, 2004 Author Posted August 8, 2004 Thanks for al your help, folks. The transfer went relatively smoothly (I had to break up the database into quite a few files, because it kept timing out in phpMyAdmin). It's all up and running, and I just officially changed the nameservers. Now, the waiting begins Quote
