DCS Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 I was recently looking into a wireless network. If you have any suggestions for hardware (router, cards, etc), please post them here. Thanks! Quote
LisaJill Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 The linksys is really a good brand. I have the dual band one (supports b and g networks) but forget the model. The one thing I highly suggest is to avoid the heck out of SMC routers. What a horror. =/ Quote
Larry Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 I like my Linksys WRT54G.. I put the sveasoft firmware on it, and it added a bunch of stuff that the default linksys didn't offer.. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 I use DLink and have had not problems. I have a DLink DI-614+ router. Quote
kevan_j Posted July 21, 2004 Posted July 21, 2004 I have used a couple of different Linksys WAPs and all have performed flawlessly. I've connected Gateway laptops with built-in WiFi G, Dells with their WiFi B card, a Compaq Armada with a Cisco 340 WiFi card (actually a XCircom brand but it's the same thing), and a Sony Clie NX70V with a Sony WL100 Compact Flash WiFi card. I haven't seen any problems (that weren't user induced !!) Hey Larry, what's the firmware alternative you mentioned? I didn't know there was an alternative to the standard Linksys firmware. Quote
DCS Posted July 21, 2004 Author Posted July 21, 2004 Thank you all for the helpful suggestions. Would any of you have any suggestions on wireless cards for laptops? Thanks. Quote
borfast Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 Kevan, check out this google search: http://www.google.com/search?q=sveasoft+firmware Quote
Madmanmcp Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 There's been discussion over on dslreports also h__p://www.dslreports.com/shownews/49596 Quote
kevan_j Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 I've seen the website for sveasoft. Interesting stuff. I'm concerened about the GPL issues tho. I would hate to flash my router with this code, then have sveasoft disappear and all support with them. Quote
