Virtual Imager Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 A lot of stuff that I want to see ends up in my spam folder. This brings up several questions: 1. Is there a simple way to tell whoever (or whatever) I need to tell that a certain message/sender is not spam? I use Hotmail as an extra account for certain things and in their junkmail view you can select a message and click "this is not junk" and all future emails from that address will go to your inbox. Seems easy enough. Do we have something like that? Or 2. Do I have to individually add each of these senders to an allow list? 3. Can I get these messages to download if I create a local Spam folder in OE so I don't have to go online to my Horde mailbox to see what's in the spam folder and if it's something I need? Seems like every time I check my email with OE I also have to go online to check Horde... a lot of extra steps. I'm sure there's an easier way that I'm just not aware of. VI Quote
Virtual Imager Posted July 20, 2004 Author Posted July 20, 2004 Anyone???? I can't be the only one out here who finds 'important' mail in the spam folder. O the only one tired of having to go online to check the folder. Anyone have any solutiions? Quote
GroovyFish Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 I have Spam Assassin enabled but NOT the spam box. My spam assassin is configured to add "*****SPAM*****" to the subject of emails it considers spam and then when I download in Outlook I have a rule that automatically places them in a spam folder. I guess if you get alot of spam this might not be the best solution, but I only get about 1/2 dozen spam messages a week. This doesn't answer your questions really, but maybe doing this would be easier than having to check spam folder online. E Quote
TCH-Rob Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 I do tha same as the Groovster but I have had 350 spam messages in the past six days. Your miles may vary. Quote

E Thanks Ellen and Rob! that's exactly the info I needed to at least not have to go online to check the folder. I guess I can come up with other rules that will allow most of the important stuff through. If not, it just got way easier to deal with. Thanks again! VI Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 VI, you can do this also. Turn off the spam box and create another email account to forward all messages spam assassin considers to be spam. Then you can add this account to your Outlook to check. That's how I set mine up until I was sure SA wasn't catching good email. Quote
Virtual Imager Posted July 20, 2004 Author Posted July 20, 2004 Thanks, Bruce. Sounds like a similair solution to Ellen's, but having the separate folder in my existing email account seems a little more convenient. This way I don't have to check two accounts. I set it up last night, checked it this morning, and it works! SA relabeled the subjects of emails it considers spam to *****SPAM***** and OE put them in a separate folder. Is there some security reason or other reason that a 2nd email account might be preferable.??? I truly do learn something new every day around here. Thank you all. VI Quote
GroovyFish Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 I think it would accomplish the same thing, the benefit would be that (if I am understanding Bruce correctly) there would be no re-writing of the subject field. The rule in Outlook Express would be to move any emails to your "spam" email address to a certain folder. Bruce will need to explain how to tell spam assassin how to route spam email to the address though, I am not sure how to set that up. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 Ellen you are correct. I don't rewrite the headers. You can check this Help Page for how I have it configured. Basically, I set up a filter for any email that has a Spam Assassin header beginning with "yes" forwarded to my Spam@**** address. The reason for using 2 accounts is I don't check the spam one very often and didn't feel like downloading all the crap mail all the time. Plus I use PopTray (www.poptray.org) to monitor the spam account which just downloads the headers and I can determine if I want to remove them before actually downloading the email from that account. (saves bandwidth) Quote
GroovyFish Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 You know, I NEVER even noticed the email filtering in cpanel! Hmm..whatelse can I do with filtering. Time to start playing! woooot Quote
