I have spent a couple of days now trying to figure this out.

Acdsee´s way of sorting files are

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thomas, I don't think there's a way to "fix" it because, unfortunately, there's nothing "wrong" with it. It's simply the way Windows sorts files

First, it sorts them by the first character, then by the second character, etc. If you have 1, 2, 1001, you'll get them sorted like 1, 1001, 2, because 1 and 1001 both start with '1'.

The "problem" is that alphabetically that's correct but not mathematically.

Since Windows does not know that 1001 is greater than 2, it places 2 after 1001, because all it matters is that the starting character os 1001 comes before the starting character of 2.

Hope that makes sense.

Thomas, Raul is correct that ACDsee is using an alpha sort instead of a numeric sort.

The only way you could get what you want is to name all your files with the same number of characters padding with leading zeroes.

Im not saying Raul is wrong, im just kind of confused because...

How come its sorted correct in explorer then and not like 1, 1001, 2...

I mean if acdsee uses some alpha sort because windows does, how come its sorted right (numeric sort) in explorer that is a part in windows?

They are probably using their own internal sort mechanism. I write software and use my own routines to sort and don't rely on Windows to help with it.

As to why Windows is sorting it correctly I couldn't say. Under older versions of Windows it worked as Raul says. Same as DOS did.

Like Bruce said, the easiest thing to do is rename the files, "with the same number of characters padding with leading zeroes," so that they come out in the right sequence. Or, you could rename them to a, b, c, etc. and sort alphabetically. Another possibility, if the sequence matches the order in which you created them, is to sort by date. Finally, you can add letters in a description field and sort by description.

Thomas... just thought of another easy way to get your files sorted. In the Navigation Pane view, use your mouse to drag files to whatever order you want them. They will stay this way untill you either choose another sort method or select "delete custom order" from the sort drop down menu.

Hope this helps...

To VI:

When I have sorted them through nav. pane, can I then use the batch rename to give them the right numbers?

I never used the navigation pane before and the batch rename I never had use for before.

You know Thomas, I've never even seen the batch rename function till you mentioned it and I went looking for it. But it does appear to work... My suggestion to you would be to batch copy your images to another folder and try it before you try it on the original folder. It can't hurt to try!

This is such a cool program! I've been using Version 4.0 for years and I still keep learning about new functions that make managing my image files so much more efficient.

Thomas, I meant that that's the way ACDSee sorts the files, not Windows. My mistake, sorry.

By the way, if you like ACDSee, try Irfanview. It's infinitely cheaper ($0.00 ) and, IMO, much better than ACDSee.

Yep, I have both ACDSee 6 and Irfanview and I use Irfanview waaaayyyy more than ACDSee.

To Rob

I tried the 30 day trial of Acdsee 6.0 some time ago, it crashed all the time. At that time I had 128 MB RAM, a while after I installed more RAM (256 MB) and figured I try it again since I had reformatted my harddrive I should be able to use it 30 days more, but it kept crashing. Is 6.0 stable?

To Raul

Thanks for the irfanview idea. I have now downloaded it, not yet installed.

and, IMO, much better than ACDSee.

One thing that crossed my mind though when downloading it was that there is no linux-version, so how can you tell?

Uh oh, bad Thomas :)

Back after installing and trying irfanview for the first time...

It froze.

Maybe it was because I tried to batch rename about 3000 files. I dont know, will try again tomorrow.

Im glad you didnt take my question about linux version too seriously.

Congrats to second place in Euro 2004 by the way.

Thomas, no problem about the linux-version question. It was a good catch ;)

About the Euro 2004: thanks. I usually don't like football (soccer) but I watched most of the Portugal-England game and I liked it. I also watched the last 20 minutes of Portugal-Greece but I didn't like it that much. The Portuguese team didn't win but who cares? It's just a game, right? At least that's the way I see it.

Congratulations to the Greek team
