danceswithscissors Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 I was participating in a discussion with a bunch of crazy people last night, but it left me curious and wondring anyhow. I own several domains, all of which are safely protected by TCH, 2 of which are active sites. I do not use, nor have I set up the email addresses for them. Last night a few people suggested that if I am not using the email addresses connected with my domains, it's possible for other people to use them, covertly. I told them that was ridiculous, but I couldn't back up my rejection of their theory because I don't fully understand how it all works. I know it's possible for email addresses to be *hijacked* for spamming purposes, (I've had that happen before), but nobody can just grab my domain addys for their own general use. I'm right ... right? Quote
MikeJ Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 With your configuration at TCH (and most places) people cannot "covertly" use your email addresses to receive email. People *can* send email claiming to be from your domain, but that's an issue with the way SMTP (the email protocol) works, not anything with the security of your site or your domain. And that also doesn't really have anything to do with whether you are using your email addresses or not. Forging of email addresses is relatively easy to detect. These crazy people you were talking to sound a bit like conspiracy theorists. Quote
