TCH-Thomas Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 Im working on a menu which will contain a link to instant messengers, but its a too long word. Does anyone of the english speaking members know any good synonyms for "Instant messengers" but not an abbr. (like IM´s)? Quote
Deverill Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 They really are a thing of their own, aren't they? You might like "chat" but that really doesn't fit perfectly. I honestly can't think of another good short name. Would "messengers" work for you? Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted June 12, 2004 Author Posted June 12, 2004 First of all, thanks Jim Would "messengers" work for you? It would, but i was thinking that you english people would think i mean "messenger" as in delivering packages etc from door to door, which im not. Quote
TCH-Rob Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 Thomas, When the word messenger is used, most often I do not think of a delivery person. Also it depends on the context used. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted June 12, 2004 Author Posted June 12, 2004 Thanks Rob Then we can do this to movies (where i learned what messenger means). So: blah blah blah messengers blah blah blah would be fully understandable? Quote
TCH-Rob Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 So: blah blah blah messengers blah blah blah would be fully understandable? Well, If blah blah blah was referring to computers or the Internet then I would most likely take it as being an instant messenger. If it were referring to packages I would expect to see you at my house at 9 am tomorrow morning. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted June 12, 2004 Author Posted June 12, 2004 Well, it refers to a variety of things. And thats the problem. If it were referring to packages I would expect to see you at my house at 9 am tomorrow morning. Put the kettle on Quote
TCH-Rob Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 I would really need to see what would be before messenger to make a decision, the kettle has been put on. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted June 12, 2004 Author Posted June 12, 2004 Here´s the list as it looks now Animals & Nature Celebrities Fonts Graphics & Art Greeting cards Health IM´s etc Media Personal websites Reference Scripts Quote
TCH-Rob Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 "IM´s etc" seems to be the best fit. Is there a reason you do not want to use that? Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted June 12, 2004 Author Posted June 12, 2004 Im just not sure if non-computer people (esp. non-english) will understand. I think thats all (Thomas is thinking now...) Quote
TCH-Don Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 Thomas, I think anyone that will use an instant messenger will know what messenger means. And you can add a bigger discription to the title tag, Quote
TCH-Rob Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 Im just not sure if non-computer people (esp. non-english) will understand. You mean some people dont speak English? Quote
