Forgive me, but I don't know what the hell I'm doing.

I am fairly good with computers, but the "web-hosting" thing is all new to me (so REALLY dumb-down any information you may have for me).

Let me elaborate -

I don't want a real website, I just want a place to post some pictures of my various activities so that friends/family can view them. I also want friends/family to be able to download any videos I may have for them that are too big to send via e-mail.

So I just signed up today, got the confirmations that my site is up, so I go on the Cpanel and try to post a picture.

I went to public_ftp folder, and uploaded a picture (jpeg). The file size is listed correctly, but when I click on "show contents of file" all I get is the red X!

If I click on properties and try and link the picture from another website, I get the red X.

What did I miss. I thought this would be easy.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the family Mike :)

In cpanel, look for the link to file manager and click it

it will open in new window.

look for the folder

public_html

click on the folder icon (not the text link)

now you are in your public area (where others can see)

look for the upload link and browse to the file on your computer and select it and upload it

now you can see the file as (from your welcome e-mail

http://IP~username,

and later if you have a domain name that too will show the list of files there

that is the simple version, later you can get into web pages when you are ready.

Also, if hotlink protection is enabled, you can only see a picture WITH the domain name, not with the IP number. That didn't seem to be the issue here, but for someone else watching this thread later, I thought I'd chime in...

I had to add the IP number in the appropriate window in cpanel while my domain was propagating, and add any other site I wanted my images to show up on.

Even I can't view it when I click on "View File Contents". It shows up as a Red X.

As you pretty much figured out already, cPanel's show file contents has some issues with spaces in the file name (as in it doesn't work :)).

It's probably good practice to avoid spaces in filenames anyway to make things the most compatible and easiest to access.
