  1. Hapes.tchmachines.com (208.76.82.116) looks to be blacklisted by Verizon. This sucks because I have a need to e-mail several folks with Verizon addresses. My domain hosted here is my main e-mail also. Here is the relevant part of the bounce notice: SMTP error from remote mail server after initial connection: host relay.verizon.net [206.46.232.11]: 571 Email from 208.76.82.116 is currently blocked by Verizon Online's anti-spam system. The email sender or Email Service Provider may visit http://www.verizon.net/whitelist and request removal of the block. 111127 Should I put in a support ticket for this? No, I haven't gone to the link and requested the block be removed. I was thinking it might be better coming from someone at TCH.
  2. Thanks Bruce. Sorry about posting this in the wrong forum initially. I wasn't sure where the heck it should go!
  3. I am hosting a genealogy related site here. Once every three months we send out a newsletter. It's a pdf file and is usually between 500KB and 1500KB in size. Right now our editor is sending this using her personal e-mail via AOHell. (Can't get her to change, believe me, I've tried) I don't want her getting listed as a spammer and want to give her an e-mail address through our site. My question is this: Could she send a single e-mail with an attachment in the above size range, to roughly 250 recipients, through my site (and TCH Servers obviously) without having my domain being blacklisted as a spammer? (Or causing problems for TCH also) I don't know how this all works and what the thresholds are that trip that kind of thing. Any guidance or information would be appreciated.
  4. I would like to make a suggestion if I may. Perhaps you guys can pass this along to the people that could act on it. When I first saw this e-mail this morning, the first thing that popped into my head was "phishing." Upon looking at it closer, I figured it was either one of the best phishing e-mails I had seen, or that it was legit. I opened my browser and typed the URL into the address bar. I will not copy and paste a URL from a suspect e-mail. Lo and behold, I got nothing but 404 errors. Didn't matter if I tried the whole URL, the root domain, or any combination in between. Once I saw that, the credibility of the e-mail went right in the toilet. I have a feeling that many people acting the way I did would just shift+del that e-mail. I almost did, but I decided to forward it to support and ask. They of course informed me that it was legit. Then I came out here and saw this post. In my opinion, the URL needs to be accessible by typing it into the address bar of the browser. It would go a long ways to establishing credibility. Just my 2 cents worth.
  5. Very weird that it worked for me and not for you. Oh well, the site is working for me and that is all that matters. Thanks for the help Don.
  6. Actually it did install to an existing folder. I already had the subdomain setup. I just installed it to the root of that folder. /public_html/forums One more question if you don't mind me pestering you. Do you have any recommendations as to what the files and folders permissions should be CHMOD'ed to after install? I did install using fantastico. Should I just leave them alone? The only thing I would need to mess with is settings.php I think. After install it was set to 644. If I want to edit server settings I can manually change settings.php to 777 and when I'm done set it back to 644. Is this the best way? I don't want my site or your server left open to anything. Can you tell I am new at this?
  7. Quick question. I am getting ready to install smf on a sub domain of mine. Should I install smf in the root of that sub domains folder or should I install to a sub folder of that? I'm not sure what best practice is or if it even matters. Matt
  8. I am playing around with SMF in my sandbox at home right now. I have a feeling this is what I am going to use. I messed around with phpBB 2.0.21 for a couple of days and it just didn't float my boat. If the forum growth justifies it, I can upgrade to vBulletin or IPB in the future if I want to. Since this will be such a niche community I seriously doubt that will ever happen. I really love vBulletin but I just can't justify the money for what will be a very small community. All my favorite forums I am active member of use vBulletin. i.e. ABXZone, CivFanatics, and others. Anyways, when I get home from work, I will be hunting for SMF themes. Need to see what all is out there for this package.
  9. Thanks for the quick response Thomas.
  10. New guy here. I am going to be putting up a genealogical website (family assoc.) and I want to run a forum on it in a sub domain. My question is this: I have noticed that in the FAQ's, SMF and phpBB are explicitly mentioned as being ok to run on TCH servers. Can I run vBulletin? Looks like the servers meet sys req. for it. (php 4.3.3 and MySQL 4.0.16 are min req. for VB 3.6) I'm not sure I want to spend the money on VB, I am just wondering if I can consider it as an option. Thanks, Matt
  11. Thanks for the info and the welcomes. I've pretty much made up my mind this is what I'm going to do. I will ask them to release the lock so it can be transfered. I have no access to the name servers. This is going to take a while. It's the type of outfit, if you send them an e-mail and get answer back within 2 weeks you can consider yourself lucky. Since they did her a favor though I am going to stay there for 3 months or so. Hell it will probably take that long to get the lock released. See you guys sometime this summer.
  12. Howdy, I am looking for a new hosting solution and you guys look like the solution. First a little background, then a question for you: I just got my site up and running on another server. It's a genealogy based site and the guy who is hosting it is doing it as a favor to the lady who runs our DNA project. He got the domain name for us. Unfortunately the solution is basically just a folder on a web server. In other words, it totally sucks. No reflection on those guys, they aren't in the web hosting business. Like a said, they are just doing her a favor. I just ran a WhoIs on our domain name and this is what came back. Sponsoring Registrar:Blueberry Hill Communications Inc. dba 4domains.com (R104-LROR) Status:CLIENT TRANSFER PROHIBITED Status:TRANSFER PROHIBITED Naturally, those Transfer prohibited entries concern me. How do I get this domain transfered over to you guys? Can it be done? We (meaning the Family Assoc.) paid for the registration so I am assuming I just need to get these people to change the status. Any clarification appreciated.
