Well, if you are looking for a web design company in Ireland, you would go to google.ie and search "web design" or you would go to google.com and search "web design" localized results. Anyway, you are automatically taken to the localized version of Google if you live in a particular country, for instance English people are taken to google.co.uk even if they type in google.com.

Hi I am getting mixed answers to the following question: does it matter where you host your website if you want to achieve high localized rankings for it? Of course your domain name must be the local one. For instance if I have a site called www.poachedeggs.ie, does it matter if I host it in the US instead of Ireland if I want a high result on www.google.ie? Regards rowanp.

That's a great idea , we would appreciate it. We are developing a website called Freelanza.com (http://www.freelanza.com). It will be a virtual marketplace where individuals, entrepreneurs, and small-to-medium enterprises can buy and sell professional services in various categories. You are all welcome to view the site, although keep in mind that it is still under construction. We therefore need banners, buttons, and skyscrapers to convince people how our website solves their outsourcing problems. Here are some examples of categories where you can outsource projects through our site: Web Design Search Engine Optimization Banner Ads Logo design Copy Writing Translation Typing Web Content Software development Advertising Online Marketing Offline Marketing Legal Contracts Legal Advice Any ideas about banners (and banner designers) would be greatly appreciated. Who knows, we may even reward you with a prize . Regards Rowan Polovin freelanza.com imagineer

Hi Is there a way to restrict FTP access to only certain directories? Regards rowanp
-
have you tried creating a folder in the home directory like /home/backup/ and change its permissions ? Oh yes welcome to the forum all <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I have created a /home/backup directory and changed the permissions, but the problem is getting the backup script to send the backup file to that directory. I don't know how to do that. Rowan.
-
The reason it is not working is because your permissions on your home directory do not allow files to be stored there. I do not recommend getting these changed. The script needs to be modified to allow for storing a backup file on another directory like /home/backup. Any suggestions?

Great script, but I am having the same problem that Billy did, and the answer never seems to have been provided. The ftp home directory permissions do not allow the backup file to be created there. As I do not wish to change the permissions on the home directory, how can the script be modified so as to upload the backup to a specific directory like /backup for instance? Thank you.

Thanks all for your help. I have solved the problem. regards rowanp.

Well, it is a customized program that I had created for my website. There is obviously a way round the protocol, and these major programs probably have a solution. Of course, the protocol is designed to prevent spamming and that is always a good thing, but not at the expense of legitimate e-commerce websites.

Hi I just want to inform people that the TCH servers use the POP before SMTP protocol that controls the email relay based on successful POP logins. What this means is that you cannot send an email through a script (using sendmail) without first having it verified. How you have it verified if you are trying for instance to send a "confirmation email" to a new user is a mystery to me. I spent almost the whole day trying to get an answer about this from support, so just want to save you the effort. rowanp.

I am installing a pre-built, and customized, cgi script on my site. I am worried about the potential security issues that this may bring, and thought that limiting cgis to the cgi-bin may help in some way. Any other suggestions as how to make a script more secure would be welcome.

Here at TCH.

Hi How do I fix the server to only allow cgi files to be run from the cgi-bin directory? Thanks rowanp.

A dedicated server is certainly an option for the future. At the moment, I am unsure how successful the website will be. I suppose that if I have a situation where more emails than 50 per 300 seconds are sent, then upgrading will probably be essential. I suppose that I am worried that this will happen without me being aware, and the next thing seeing my account (and website) being suspended.

Hi I am planning on installing quite a complex script at my site that has the potential to send more than 50 emails per 300 seconds. The purpose of the mails are not mailing lists or newsletters, but to notify the individual subscribers at the site when something that interests them (chosen by their preferences) comes up at the site. I understand that TCH's smtp servers set a limit on this. Since there is no possible way that the script can be modified, I need another option here. I am willing to pay more for the ability to send more mails, should it be necessary. I can assure you that the increase in mails would not be drastic, since there may only be 1000-2000 subscribers at the site (who can choose to be notified about email from 11 preferences). Are there any solutions? Regards rowanp.

Hi My company is currently in the development phase of a new ecommerce site hosted by TCH. With all the news I hear about sites being hacked, I am getting a bit paranoid about online security. The site already has an SSL certificate installed, but that of course won't make a difference in terms of hackers breaking into the site and changing its content. What are the best precautionary measures to take? Regards rowanp.

How To Install Squirrelmail - The Ultimate Guide
rowanp replied to dlevens's topic in Client Written Tutorials
Are there any Squirrelmail plugins available to allow users to create their own email accounts (with some sort of email verification process)? Regards rowanp. -
Hi I am about to install an application on my site which is made up of several scripts. Some of them will require an SSL connection. Assuming I buy an SSL certificate and have it installed (which I have not yet done), how exactly will I secure the script, i.e. how will I get some of the scripts to be sent through SSL and others not ? Is it as simple as changing the http to https on the pages that I need to be secured or will I have to upload some of the scripts in a special directory? Also, while I'm on the subject , how safe are cgi scripts? Is it possible for someone to hack into them from the outside? How safe is the information passed through them? Thank you for your help Rowan.

Wow, thanks Andy for your help and thank you all for welcoming me to your family! I am constantly amazed by the friendly support I get at TCH. Keep it up Rowan.

Hi Sorry if this is the wrong forum to ask this question, but it seems most appropriate. I currently have 2 accounts at TCH and am thinking of hosting a third domain with you, as I am very impressed with your support and services. I have registered several .com domains that I am having forwarded, via my .com registrar, to the new domain that I will have hosted by TCH. Here is my problem: the one domain that I have registered locally (a .co.za domain in South Africa), also needs to be forwarded. The local registrar does not provide domain forwarding services (and this registrar is the only one I can use in South Africa unfortunately). Neither do they provide domain parking. Is there any way to get this domain parked and forwarded to another one through TCH without having to buy an additional account to do this? Do you have any ideas or solutions? Thank you for your efforts Rowan Polovin.
