Phplists Bounce Processing Error
ericwilmoth replied to ericwilmoth's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
Thanks Bruce. On another note, ironically, i'm suddenly having trouble sending basic emails (receiving just fine, though). I've attempted the live support since it would be problematic replying to messages, but nobody seems to be responding. Any idea if there's actually anyone there right now receiving incoming requests for help? -

Sorry to double-post, but the edit button was not availble for some reason. The problem is solved. In case it helps anyone, for future reference, the info came from the PHPlist forum thread i last posted, which i'll add again here: http://forums.phplist.com/viewtopic.php?p=45157#45157 The post was made by fivalive on page 4 of the thread. -

Phplists Bounce Processing Error
ericwilmoth replied to ericwilmoth's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
Thanks. I did that and it seemed to work...only to lead to a larger mystery. I've run a number of tests and have collected a lot of info, and before i start dumping all of that on you, i want to confirm a couple things... First, what version of PHP is TCH using? It appears from the various posts i've read that PHPlists may need version 5 running, even though the config file says: # requires PHP version > "4.0.5" and "4.3.1+" also... So, is this installed? Lastly, if neither of these is the problem, the only other item that i think could be the culprit is that i've found various references in the PHPlist forums concerning the need to have the popper coding in the header of the outgoing messages--specifically the message envelope address--but i have not found one shred of documentation that explains where or how to set this up. The only thing it says is to check the source of the header in those messages to see that the errors-to address is correct--but i look at my source and there's not a damn thing there about any of this. The most involved info i've found about this yet is in this thread (which i just posted to) http://forums.phplist.com/viewtopic.php?p=45117#45117 . Page three, toward the bottom has a lot to say about this, but i can't draw any conclusions from it on how i should go about plugging such code into my header...short of actually creating a template that has it...but i also can't tell what it is i actually need. P.S.--one other thing i should state is that i already found mention that my host setting should probably be 'mail.archetypalimages.com' rather than just 'archetypalimages.com', and have already changed that. I'm not positive that's correct though, since it didn't' help and was advised by just a general user, not the main administrator of PHPlist. P.P.S. --i just want to say a general thanks to all those helping me with this. While PHPlist seems like a great program their forum support is really lacking (just one head honcho, by the sound of things). TCH, on the other hand, has always been very prompt in helping me resolve any issues i have, and i really appreciate the fact that you guys take helping us customers so seriously. I wouldn't trouble you guys with this if i could help it, but i have a feeling i'll find out more from you than i will from the sole monitor at PHPlist. Thanks...and still praying! -
I’m having difficulty getting the bounced messages feature in PHPlists to work. I got this error: ----------------------------- Cannot create POP3 connection to archetypalimages.com: Too many login failures Identifying consecutive bounces Nothing to do Identifying consecutive bounces 0 users processed --------------------------- I already posted a more detailed message in the PHPlists forum on this issue (http://forums.phplist.com/viewtopic.php?p=45056#45056 @ bottom of page) but figured I’d try out here too. This is essentially the last critical item between me and posting, and I have an extremely urgent announcement I need to get out that I’ve been putting off for over a week in order to get PHPlists up and running—I’m praying to get it out by tomorrow if I can. If anyone here has any experience with this or even has a clue what the problem might be you could really save my @$$!

Phplists Pre-flight Checklist: Dnsreport.com?
ericwilmoth replied to ericwilmoth's topic in Scripting Talk
Good Luck. Getting it set up is fairly tedious--at least, it was for me (fully customizing everything and making it work nicely with the third-party spam filtering I'm using) but as i'm nearing the finish line i can tell it'll be worth it. -
Phplists Pre-flight Checklist: Dnsreport.com?

Okie-doke. I'll buy that for a dollar. Thanks for the good word. -
Hi. I’m going through the final stages of a very long and drawn-out process of getting PHPlists up and running and towards the end there’s mention of verifying reverse DNS, and they list a link to DNSreport.com. This is a pay service that does whatever it does to ‘check’ your DNS, offering a 3 week trial, as long as you provide a credit card that they bill after three weeks if you’re still using it, I guess. Flat out, I’m burned out on sorting out this thing already and am critically falling behind on a number of other priorities, and I was hoping someone here could lend me some insight about whether this is something I even need to be concerned about—I’m clueless and I barely have two brain cells left to rub together. If anyone here can kindly guide me through this I would be grateful.

That is very odd. I did a search a couple days back when i was researching all this and the search came back with zero matches. Now it seems to be working.

Actually, i already went ahead and set the throttle at XXXX seconds, which looks like it'll meet the two time requirements. I may go ahead and do a ticket anyway just to make it official that someone over there sees it and approves. Thanks for the suggestion. Incidentally, i was surprised not to find any postings about PHPlists. After reviewing it i was very impressed. It appears to have the functionality of the premium pay services, but at no cost. How is it other TCH users aren't taking advantage of this?

I've read a couple places that constant contact is prone to delivery problems due to spam filtering. After Edit: Can anyone here tell me anything about PHPlists in Fantasico? I barely comprehend php and don't work with it...but maybe this isn't painful...?

Hm. Are you talking about some script that's available through DADA (not sure if you use it or not) or some third party thing? (i still haven't implemented DADA yet.) It's been a while since i sent out anything, but most of the people in my address book either officially signed up to receive emails at special events or personally requested it. So far as i know DADA allows for subscribe/unsubscribe and i don't plan on mailing to anyone who wouldn't expect it...though i do have one issue with that. So much time has passed since i last sent a serious update (i'm talking a couple years, here) that i no longer have a popper subscriber list...just my address list. I figured for this first (new) update i'd have something like DADA in place, send out the message to everyone in my address book with a brief notice about the option of being removed if they don't want to be on the list. I'm going to be spending today reviewing DADA and (i think) setting it up. If i recall it allows importing of existing address books, so presumable the few people in my address book not wanting to be part of things could go to my website and opt out. I'll definitely take one pass through my list to remove the obvious candidates who would not want to receive such a message, but there may be a some i would miss. So that's my plan. How does that sound?
-
No Problem. Thanks again for the help.

Hola. I'm looking to set up an email newsletter. At this point Dada looks like like a decent way to go...and it sounds like as long as i set it to send my messages out in the proper batch allotments i wont be likely to set off any spam alerts or anything...but i figured i'd get a personal review from the folks here based on my personal needs. Basically i have several hundred people on my mailing list at the moment and figure I'll be updating a couple times a month, minimum. I've only done a minimal amount of searching about alternative paying services...so i figure i'll do a bit more just to ensure i'm not overlooking some important features or complications i might have with using a free service like Dada...but ultimately i want to keep this as simple as possible for as long as i can, until it's demanding a real financial investment. Currently my email list has been done through my Microsoft Outlook address book... ...if anyone can think of anything i might be unaware of that i should be considering in all of this i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Sorry to double-post, but i solved the problem with your advice. What i couldn't figure out how to do was create an .htaccess file. in the end i just copied the one in my public directory and pasted it into the blog folder, then edited that. Now everything works. Thanks Bruce!
-
Bruce, What kind of file type is that? I mean, i see it's an .htaccess, but in the file manager the types of new files it lets me create are text documents, html docs and perl and shell scripts. I'm confused.
-
I have no idea how to do that. I think i recall passing a link about that at one point, but didn't realize it's significance at the time. I still haven't upgraded yet. I guess i'll do that first and then look for how to update the .htaccess file. Thanks!
-
Yeah--sorry. I should've thought of that on my own. http://archetypalimages.com/blog/

I can do the fantastico thing, i believe...i jsut wasn't sure if that would overwrite everything or if it would preserve my settings.

Hi. I'm having a killer issue with Wordpress. I'm a new user and have been playing around with various options and features for the last couple days just trying to figure it all out and suddenly I'm noticing that the sidebar links to my categories, pages and archives aren't targeting properly. they're all going to my error page and i have no clue why that would be. Can someone lend a hand?
-
By the way, i know i should be upgrading to the new WP. Can anyone point me in the right direction for taking care of that?
-
Cool. I'll let you know how it works out.
-
Thanks, Bruce--that's definitely an option i hadn't yet discovered. I'll check that out. Have you or anyone else used this before?
-
That's cool. My blog is intended to be professional to promote my personal website/comics, which is why I'm looking for the customization. I'm beginning to realize that for the moment i may need to sacrifice full customization to meet the urgency i have to get the basic blog up and running...I've just been so overwhelmed by all the options and have very little time to work with, but don't want to wind up putting up something either sub-par, too far removed from the look of my site or moving so far in one direction that i have to backtrack when i finally have the time to reanalyze all this. Word Press does seem to have the flexibility I'll ultimately want to take advantage of, so again, for now it looks like I'm just going to have to live with something that is to be a work in progress.
-
I realize i can get a basic blog up and running with little poking around, but Ultimately I'm looking for complete customization, have no experience with php and no money to hire someone who does. The tutorials i was finding on line kept dragging me down various rabbit holes that eventually became too mired in assumed knowledge that i did not posses (or didn't appear to work the way they said they would), so i was hoping the actual wordpress site could help...but of course it is the biggest rats nest of a site when it comes to actual navigation. I actually found links in there that talk about good navigation and had to cackle with fury at the thought of anyone there ever taking the time to employ their own advice. I'm sure all reading this will think me MAD...and they won't be far from the truth...but i was possessed with a raw compulsion to actually recreate their site navigation in a personal document and essentially eliminate their redundancies--which i shudder to recall--and reorganize them in some fashion a human being can actually make sense of. It took a number of hours of raw determination and absolute piss and vinegar, but i finally have something that is streamlined, concise and easy to understand at a glance. If I'm feeling nice i may even send it to the administrators there as a suggested structure; i already complained to them via their 'Kvetch' link.
