LOL!!!!!!

So you're saying that you're not only the Hair Club for Men president, you're also a client?
-
I totally agree - it would be nice to have a place where its understood that this is a dedicated area, I have root access, etc etc. I always feel kinda lost where to post those questions now
-
At least not to my face, right? woooot woooot woooot LOL I *do* appreciate that Bill Its that kind of openness and support that made me pick TCH in the first place. That said, I don't *mind* doing most of the maintenance by myself - and I don't want to bother your techies if its something I should be able to do myself - since I'm not paying you to manage the server. I used to syadmin (among many other things) a few years back - my problem is largely that I'm out of practice for the day to day stuff. Even then, the problems I usually have are cpanel/WHM related - not "normal" linux admin stuff. Its these funky scripts and dependencies that keep biting me on the tooshy! I usually figure it out eventually. But a forum for dedicated server folks might still be kinda spiffy!

This might be in the wrong section... LOL But this is cute: http://www.infinitecat.com/

I think a forum for dedicated servers would be most excellent - IF enough of the techs were onhand to actually help with it of course. I usually wind up trying to find the answers on my own, or I go to my local irc channel for my LUG. I remember from talking to Bill a while back that you don't have a ton of dedicated unmanaged clients, so I can understand if a whole forum for it isn't accepted as a good idea. But I know it would sure help me out. Most of the forums here are intended for vhosted clients, so just finding basic cpanel scripts, etc can be a real hassle. (For example, the script to manually call cpanel to do a backup, etc.) I always feel badly for opening a trouble ticket when I'm not sure what the problem is. I have an unmanaged server, so I don't like asking the techs to do things that *I* should be doing. If we had a place where dopes like me could exchange experiences and learn along the way, that would be awesome. And you could have some stickies that describe common cpanel scripts and stuff like that. (If you need any help gathering any of the info, I am happy to help. I have a ton of bookmarks now related to cpanel and WHM... lol)

I'm running into service warnings for a particular site that has been generating heavy traffic. It seems like implementing Apache's split-log program would be a good choice at this point - but their documentation on it is.. uhm... not exactly stellar. Anyone have suggestions on an actual step-by-step to set it up properly - and any issues I might run into with my virtually hosted sites on the box?
-
Feh. Now its back up. I hate computers.
-
I don't know if this is directly related to the upgrade I just did or not, but.... I just used the apache upgrade script, and I also upgraded php to 4.3.9. That seemed to go okay, but the server was running slow. I rebooted the machine, and now it won't come up at all, via FTP, SSH or http.... Anyone have any suggestions (other than opening a trouble ticket...)

I keep getting these emails: IMPORTANT: Do not ignore this email. This is cPanel stats runner on basilisk.vitruvianarts.com! While processing the log files for user petabuse, the cpu has been maxed out for more then a 6 hour period. The current load/uptime line on the server at the time of this email is 14:15:49 up 22 days, 17:34, 0 users, load average: 1.02, 6.16, 8.10 You should check the server to see why the load is so high and take steps to lower the load. If you want stats to continue to run even with a high load; Edit /var/cpanel/cpanel.config and change extracpus to a number larger then 0 (run /usr/local/cpanel/startup afterwards to pickup the changes). I have also noticed mySQL taking up considerably more memory than it should at times - and I'm wondering what are the most direct steps I can take to isolate the problem? (I know a million things I *can* do - but I'm hoping for some experienced advice on what I *should* do... LOL) How do I figure out what script or set of scripts is the culprit here?
-
Absolutely - we have gotten letters from a bunch of different countries. They DO help. Even though you're not responsible for voting these people in during their next term, NOBODY wants to be put on the international map because of animal cruelty.

Ugh, don't even get me STARTED, Raul. This is the last thing I have gotten: Hi Everyone, The trial of John Weinhart/Tiger Rescue has once again been postponed. There are 63 counts of felony animal abuse pending against Weinhart & his common law wife, Marla Smith. It is time for public outcry. We don't believe that the District Attorney who is assigned to prosecute Weinhart & Smith is taking the case seriously. She was seen in the courtroom recently yukking it up with Weinhart's defense attorney, and she didn't object to another continuance. Even the judge was exasperated. Letters are needed ASAP to the main District Attorney in Riverside County (see below) and to the presiding judge in the case. Please politely but firmly express your outrage that Weinhart and Smith have not yet been brought to justice for all of the animals that they abused and killed during the 12 years that they operated Tier Rescue as a tourist attraction. Remember, all the while they were breeding tigers and making money. Also, please express your concern and insistence that the case be thoroughly and competently prosecuted. Let them know that we are watching and waiting for a just outcome. Because we don't want all of our letters to sound the same, we aren't including a sample letter. If you would like additional information, or would like one of us to read your letter before you mail it, please let us know. Here is the information that you need. Case # : RIF110175 Re: Defendants: John Hans Weinhart & Marla Jean Smith Mr. Grover Trask Riverside County District Attorney 4075 Main Street Riverside, California 92501 With copies of your letter to: Stephanie B. Weissman, Deputy District Attorney Richard West, Supervising District Attorney 4075 Main Street Riverside, California 92501 Judge Ronald L. Taylor Superior Court, County of Riverside Riverside Historic Courthouse 4050 Main St. Riverside, CA 92501 Working on finding out the actual new trial date. http://www.savethetigers.com/info/timeline.php Scroll down and you can see how many times its been postponed already.

Well, I like mailman and I like the fact that I can offer it to my hostees via web admin. I did actually fix the problem, after hours of tearing my hair out. The /scripts/fixmailman and /scripts/reinstallmailman were throwing errors - so I upgraded to the Release version of Cpanel (rather than stable, which I had been using), installed python-devel, and then ran the renstallmailman script. That did the trick - finally!
-
Last I have heard, the trial was postponed *again*. I'll fill you in when I know for sure.
-
Well, assuming the backup drive is (finally) working properly, I should have a backup - but my frustration is more along the lines that it happens every time. I'm on a dedicated box, so this isn't really trouble-ticket material for you guys - its my job as admin to sort this junk out and get to the bottom of it. I don't pay you guys enough to sort through *my* screwups. LOL I was just posting here to see if anyone else had run into this, and if so, what the solution was. The initial error (before I used the "rebuildmailman" scripts and made the problem worse) was a missing file - same exact error I got last time. I found a way around it last time, but I (mistakenly) assumed that the "fixmailman" type scripts would solve the problem without me having to monkey around like last time. Long story short (too late) - I foobar'd it worse than it was before. Phooey. Lesson learned. But I still need to figure what exactly is happening when cpanel updates that keeps breaking this.
-
Hehe well - its a double-edged sword. What we do is somewhat controversial, so I expect both good and BAD repurcussions - but its still pretty exciting! My email box is flooed with emails from people who have written in!
-
Heh.. well I scanned the article and posted it - but you have to promise not to tell on me... LOL http://www.snipe.net/showntell/people-magazine.jpg
-
If any of you folks are near a newsstand over the next week, check out the Oct 11 issue of People Magazine that came out yesterday - and flip to page 136 - thats me! And the website/organization that the article is about is hosted on the ever-fabulous TCH servers

Okay, I'm ready to fling myself off a building. Seems like every time I upgrade cpanel lately, it breaks my mailing lists. Emails sent to the list address bounce with "local delivery failed" as the error. To make matters worse, I ran a few of the scripts in the /scripts/ directory (fixmailman, etc) - and now my danged admin url comes up 404 file not found. How do I restore mailman (without losing archived info - thats critical!) My cruelty case lists have been down for several days now, and I have googled til my fingers bled. HELP! Thanks in advance!
-
Hee! Thanks! Nah, no hurry at all. I can easily make the changes to the apache config, I was just wondering if there was a way to do it in WHM. There are so many options in WHM, and the usability of it is, well, not the greatest. (Putting 5000 links in your sidenav is never a good idea... LOL) Its really not even that important - the only reason why I brought it up is because I have at least 2 sites that branded as "dot coms". Pet-Abuse.Com and Snipe.Net in particular. When people post our links on forums, in email, etc - I want them to be the links that point to the primary domain name so that if we ever decide to ditch one or more of the aliases, they still have links that work.
-
Hi there I'm trying to figure out whether or not there is a built-in way to set a domain name up as a ServerAlias, rather than a "parked" domain, through cpanel/WHM. I would like the domain name to always be that of the primary site url, so that, for example, if someone types in http://bigdumbjerk.com/geek/scripts/ - they will see http://snipe.net/geek/scripts/ in the address bar. Is there a way to do this through WHM, or am I going to have to manually edit the apache files?
-
Or of course you could just stop the script at the file_exists() point and return an erro tellintg the user to rename their file.
-
Well, you could also use file_exists() to first check and see if the filename exists, and then stick something on the end of of the filename to make it different. An example of the logic would be: 1. check if the filename already exists using file_exists() 2. if it does, split the filename, getting the base filename and the extension (using explode() or something else) 3. use something like date("U") to get the current unix time and tack that onto the base filename Make sense?

.eml File Extensions Suddenly Rejected
snipe replied to snipe's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
BTW - I realize that this is related to the thread here: http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/forums/i...p?showtopic=619 But I assume that as a dedicated hosting client, those rules do not apply to me, yes? So I suppose the shorter version of the question is: *where* are those options set. I still plan to keep .exe, .pif, .scr, etc blocked.... and quite frankly, I may decide to just tell my user to suck it up and explain the policy... But on the other hand, I also know that for pet-abuse.com, we get emails from so many unsophisticated outside users when they send it case reports. It wouldn't be realistic to expect rthem to learn this - we would wind up losing cases that are reported. Does the file extension block only work on outgoing emails from our server - or does it block incoming as well? -
DirectoryIndex allows multiple arguments - if it can't find the first one you specify, it looks for the second. Making the .htaccess in the website root say: >DirectoryIndex indexa.html index.html Will tell it to FIRST look for a file called indexa.html, and then if it can't find one, look for index.html. This should solve your problem as long as there are no indexa.html's in your subdirs.
