I don't think I did anything that would make google get "mad" at me. I pretty as if it was an introduction to the site and used all relevant keywords of services that we offer.....geez....i hope I didn't do anything wrong!

After taking advice from fellow TCH ers, I have made some changes to my index page. Venue Chicago Event Management I added more text describing the website and placed it at the very bottom where it is not seen by users, but more for the spiders that crawl the site. I want to maintain the "portal" look to the site and this was an idea I liked and that seemed to make sense to me. Is there anything else that I could do to my site to increase it's page rank? I know that I could get more sites to link back to me, but how do I find relevant sites and then on top of that convince them to link to me. This last Brandy update by google really freaked me out because my site is completely out of any searches I made. Last time I checked, my page rank was 4 and I could at least find my site when I typed in Venue Chicago Event Management (the name of the company). Now, when I search, all I can find is an a project I did for college in which I used the same company. (I've asked my old teacher repetedly to put a redirect or take the site off of her classroom website, but apparently she hasn't) But that's a whole other spiderweb to untangle. In response to this discussion....I find that on my e-mail, I am not able to compose or forward other e-mails. Is a problem with my particular account or is this something that is occuring with everyone else due to high virus activity. All e-mail is goofy at my work also. Every time I try to compose an e-mail, I am prompted to put in my login_id and password. Upon doing this, it appears that another page begins to load, then nothing happens. (this is on webmail by the way). Should I submit a help desk ticket? I'm on server 40. Thanks guys and keep up the good work! Thanks for answering so quick TCH-Nick one small problem.... I haven't recieved a cpanel name, password, or server yet so I can't complete the help desk ticket. It's honestly not that big of a deal. I just haven't recieved a confirmation e-mail that they're checking into it and was wondering if I addressed the problem correctly. I recently purchased another silver plan and made a mistake in the payment option. Who would I contact to have it corrected?? I responded to the email i got from the sales department, but have yet to hear back from them....

by sharing rights to you mean printer and file sharing? I did that, both are on the same workgroup. On the 98 machine (called FAMILY, when I click on network neighborhood, I can only see that computer (the 98 machine). When I click on my network places on the XP machine, I can see both computers....it says that I do not have access to the 98 (FAMILY) machine. stumped....

Hey guys. Can anyone point me towards the right direction? I have a computer running Windows 98 and another one running Windows XP. Both have an internet connection via a Lynksys router, but I want to share files and printers. I ran the networking wizard and have both computers with sharing properties on both computers and it didn't work. Does anyone know anything about this or know of a good place to get some info? All of the forums that I found do not address my particular problem. Thanks y'all!

I'm just learning how to use php and was wondering if I needed to install the Apache server on my computer. I know that totalchoice has Apache servers, but I don't know how to create php files or where I would do it. Please excuse the ridiculousness of the question (if it is really dumb)....I'm a little embarrased asking this, but, like I said, I'm just learning. Are there any tutorials through TCH?

Hey everyone. I'm looking into doing a website for a realty company and I need to know a few things.....hopefully this is where I can post them. I need a program called a java mortgage calculator. It calculates taxes and all that other good stuff and tells you what your mortgage payments would be. here's a rough example : http://www.mortgage--calculators.com/javamc.htm Can I buy some software that contains the program and just integrate it to my website?

As for your suggestion on the body text, the only reason I was hesitant to change it was because I really liked the way the website was set up like a portal. But I do understand what you mean about having all of those stop words on that page. I will definately have to restructure it in order to give it a higher rank. It will just take a little more thinking (and me being less stubborn...hehe). We have a great service and I want to see it succeed. I submitted it free, I was just worried that my site might not be added to alltheweb. Also, there is a waiting period correct? Having more experience than me with alltheweb, what is the average timeframe for a website to be added? Is it better to pay?

Thanks Jim. I imagined that the page rank played a big part in it. I would just think that those sites would have a higher page rank based on google's algorithms.

Thank you so much Scott. I don't think that you can imagine how much I appreciate your help. Why don't my other links show up as relevant links on google? They are what I would consider pretty relevant sites. I am registered with a chamber of commerce and a business association both containing many links to other businesses (similar to TCH-family site). I also have a question about alltheweb. They charge per url to submit. Is it worth submitting multiple urls (like an "about" or "service" page?) It is the difference between paying $70 and $140. Just want to justify the charge. One more thing to add.... Is awStats even that accurate? I feel like I am worrying about something that might not even be an issue. I really find it a useful tool, but I am weary to trust it completely. I checked both of the missing backlinks (from TCH and the chamber) and they still exist. I actually went on those sites and saw the links back to my webpage. I am almost positive it is because I changed a couple of things on the index page. Was this my mistake and can I do anything to correct it?

www.venuechicago.com I was already added to the family about 2 months ago. I am missing a link from the park ridge chamber of commerce and from TCH. I just checked again since the last time I posted and it still only one backlink shows up. (the one I did most recently)

Al Gore huh? try this theory.... If you look on a map of the US, you'll note that florida is kinda hanging out there on the east coast. I think it's some kind of weather pattern that channels all bad things as far as counting and statistics and all that to florida (hence the election blunder and the now infamous florida update). It's got to be the weather patterns..... On a serious note. If this godly update is supposed to really work, why am I number 1 under venue chicago, but i'm not even top 70 under venues chicago? Can anyone explain that? I'm going with the fact that google is possesed.

Hey guys. Hope everyone had a happy new year. I had a question about awStats and the external links. As I was looking at it, I noticed that some of my backlinks are missing. I am missing the one from Total Choice Hosting and another business association that I know has a link back to our website. We just recently got another business association to link back to us, and that shows up, but none of my previous backlinks. I changed some of the meta tags on the index page a little bit, but google hasn't picked up the changes. I know it takes time, so i'm not too worried about that. My concern is that when the spiders crawl over my website again, will they not see that I have other backlinks pointing to my site? Will this affect my page rank? Or am I just being paranoid??

You guys are really amazing. Being new to web development, I can do nothing more than just read and soak up as much as possible from you guys. Scott, you've done a great job in trying to keep up with google. Jack, what you wrote was also a great read. I apologize for not adding more to this thread, but I don't want to sound like an idiot in frot of you guys. I guess all I could say is that its just sad that Google has to do all of this changing of their algs because of the "spam is good. trick the search engines" people. Not only does it affect them as a company, it affects us users who want to search for worthwhile content on the web. "Long live the king of content" (hehe....that was nerdy Naughty )

Thank you both for your information. I freaked out a little bit thinking that there is a certain amount of potential for my site to be associated with or negatively affected by a bad backlink. So what would be the reason for this site linking back to mine? I know my page does not have a particularly high pagerank.

I was checking my AwStats and I noticed that there is a website that is linking back to mine that I do not recognize. It is bigweblist.com. When I clicked on the link, it was a site for webhosting (not TCH). Is this a problem? I gues what makes me nervous is that I did not request this website to link back to me and for some reason it did. Any suggestions on what I should do? -Sam
