wujimon Posted January 1, 2004 Posted January 1, 2004 I think I ran across this term while playing with apache a while back and was curious if this option is available. I've tried doing this via subdomains but did not achieve desirable results. Perhaps I'm missing something?? I own: domain.com domain/public_html/ I want: sub.domain.com domain/public_html/sub/ when I set this option up in cpanel, I basically get url redirection. sub.domain.com -> domain.com/sub Is there anyway to get this sort of functionality without the url changing? Thanks for any help and suggestion. w. Quote
Deverill Posted January 1, 2004 Posted January 1, 2004 On the surface it looks that way but what the user who visits your subdomain sees is sub.domain.com/ It masks it so they don't know it's domain.com/sub. At least on mine it does. If you set one up and it doesn't behave that way then let us know. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 Jim, how do you get it to display sub.domain.com instead of domain.com/sub? I have 2 subs set up for our company site and they both change the url once loaded. http://update.siriusgt.com and http://docs.siriusgt.com Quote
wujimon Posted January 2, 2004 Author Posted January 2, 2004 Basically, I went into cpanel and did the "manage subdomains" options. I first created a subdomain and then setup redirection to point it to a particular directory in my share. Is this the correct manner for doing it? like PDABruce, the url changes once the page is loaded. Is this how it's supposed to work? Quote
Lianna Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 (edited) not necessary to setup redirection....that maybe causing the problem. If you simply create the sub, the directory will automatically be created and the URL will mask properly. Going to test that again and be absolutely positively positive....brb update: Waiting on propagation.... Edited January 2, 2004 by TCH-Lianna Quote
TCH-Don Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 What I do is create the subdomain in cpanel and thats it, the redirection should be set up for you. and if you access it as http://subdomain.mysite com it should work Quote
Deverill Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 Yeah, what they said. I also just created it and it made the directory for me - no redirection necessary. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 OK, that's all I did as well but it still changes the url in the broswer once loaded. Just was wondering if there was a way to make it stick as sub.domain.com it's not really a problem because it works. I will try again with another sub and see if it changes. I may have had the sub folder already created before adding the subdomain. Quote
wujimon Posted January 2, 2004 Author Posted January 2, 2004 Thanks TCH for all your help and support in this issue. I did what was mentioned (created subdomain w/o redirection) and things worked great! I think my problem was I created the directory myself instead of letting the creation of the subdomain handle it. Also, the url is correct in that it shows the subdomain instead of reverting. Great!!! Awesome support! Rock Sign w. Quote
Lianna Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 (edited) Yup, my test went as expected too. So the learnings here are - For proper URL masking of subdomains, the subdirectory must not have already been created and must not be redirected. Create the subdomain through cPanel and publish to the automatically created directory. By the way, Welcome, wujimon! Edited January 2, 2004 by TCH-Lianna Quote
