ralphschatz Posted December 13, 2003 Posted December 13, 2003 I am trying to upload html and image files, but unless I set the permissions to 777, cpanel tells me I am not authorized to open the folders. So I changed the permissions to 777, uploaded my files, then changed the permissions back to 444. cpanel then changes them to 440 (invisible to the world). I can see the files (i.e. the site works) only with the permissions set to 777 (open to the world for modification), which I don't want to do. Am I wrong to want to set the files to be read by everyone and written by no one? Is there a setting that works? Thanks, Ralph Quote

Are you checking what the permissions are by looking at the right hand side of the filemanager window in cpanel? or are you checking them by selecting the file, then selecting change permissions, and looking where the tick boxes are? If it is the latter, then that is not accurate - cpanel does not always fill in the correct boxes for the current permissions. You need to check in the file manager window.
