mike Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 Hey, TCH'ers - any sata drive pros here can tell me how long it should take to format NTFS on a 500 gig western digital drive? Seems to get to 4% and hang. If anyone has run into this problem this old non-sata experience man would appreciate any input. thanks in advance Quote
OJB Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 If it hangs could it possibly be bad sectors? Could you run a chkdsk on the drive to try and find and fix any bad sectors? How old is the drive? Quote
mike Posted October 27, 2009 Author Posted October 27, 2009 everything is new. msi motherboard, 500 gig western digital sata drive. gets as far as 4% on the format and stops. Trying to install xp Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 If it's new why not return it for an exchange? Quote
mike Posted October 28, 2009 Author Posted October 28, 2009 Return what? It's my understanding that the problem is getting sata drivers for xp. I don't think it's a hardware problem. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 I am not Bruce so I can´t know what he is thinking but I think he means that if it seems to get to 4% and then hang, the drivers work but something is wrong with the hardware, otherwise it wouldn´t have gotten to the 4%. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 Correct in your thinking Thomas. Mike can you format the drive in FAT32? If so you can convert a FAT32 formatted drive to NTFS. Quote
mike Posted October 29, 2009 Author Posted October 29, 2009 Ok. FYI - I started over and ignored the f6 part. then chose the QUICK format. I am now finishing up the last of the virus/malware program installs and everything seems to be working great. thanks guys. ( I love TCH ) Quote
