I am looking for suggestions on the best way to get e-mail to one of my site members. (He handles all the info@mysite.com mail) Volume is light, about 4 to 24 messages per week and he uses AOL for access.

He has been very patient with the whole process but continues to have problems logging in to Squirrel Mail. He does not want to stop using AOL for his ISP and does not know how (or want to) setup Mail on his Mac machine so he could use pop mail. He is willing to use a reliable webmail program though.

First we used forwarding to a Yahoo! account and when that option went away we switched to Squirrel Mail (via ...mysite.org/sqmail)

Additionally I found out that

1. Squirrel Mail keeps all the mail, including mail stored in SPAM folders, on the website (in it's own folder of course) and

2. Site backups include all Squirrel Mail folders

This is a problem when there is any malware mail in the SPAM folder. My A-V program quarantines the entire site backup file when it finds anything.

I do not want to have to delete all SPAM mail on the server before doing any site backups.

I've thought of:

- Setting up Thunderbird (or some mail application) on his Mac but that means another unwanted program on his computer AND it limits him to one computer

- Switching to Horde or Round Cube but I don't expect either of those solutions to address the SPAM mail issue.

How does your site handle user e-mail? Or what options might you suggest?

Thank You in advance for your thoughts and ideas.

An email client on the users computer is the way to go. That's my opinion. You can still forward to a GMail address but that can change as did he AOL, Yahoo, Hotmail....

Well, since you can also setup the account as IMAP, there's really no reason not to use Mail on the Mac. CPanel has information on how to setup Mail, as well as scripts to auto-configure the program. Hope that helps.
