Stracy Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 I am having problems with the basic html editor in cpanel. The editor is adding special "A" characters and some special f characters when the page is saved. The problems compounds each time the page is saved, doubling the number of characters each time. You can see an example that follows. in the text content notice the extra A's and all of them at the bottom of the page next to the copyrigth notice. We switched to this editor so that simple content management could be done by its creator, but this glitch makes that imposible. http://www.communitysustainable.org/permaculture.html Quote
heyguy Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 Yah, it tends to do that sometimes. And sometimes not. It's a little buggy. Quote
TCH-Andy Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 Welcome to the forum Stracy As heyguy says, unfortunately that is a little buggy. How about something like; http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/ http://www.etomite.org/ http://www.solucija.com/home/snews/ which are relatively simple CMS systems. Quote
TCH-Don Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 Welcome to the forum, Stracy I have been playing with the Etomite Content Management System and like it for its simple interface. Quote
Stracy Posted July 7, 2007 Author Posted July 7, 2007 Sorry for not replying sooner! Thanks for the recomendations. I passed them on as a favor to the account owner and thought they could figure out a solution, but I guess I need to help them with the new setup. Up until now I have been helping them, with only ftp and cpanel access. I am not familiar with shell access. Could you tell me what the owner needs to ask to get shell access or do they have it by default ? It looks like having shell access is a much easier way to install a CMS system, rather than ftp. Stracy Posted July 7, 2007 Author Posted July 7, 2007 Hi TCH-Don, I have just been reading FAQ's at TCH and towards the end I found an answer that shell access is no longer allowed. Did you use FTP to upload the etomite files(directories) to the server? Steve Welcome to the forum, Stracy I have been playing with the Etomite Content Management System and like it for its simple interface. Quote
TCH-Don Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 Yes, just follow their directions on the web site. Quote
JTD Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 Are you looking for a CMS or are you looking for a simple HTML editor?? If you are looking for a html editor try this one. It is what I use.--> http://www.htmlvalidator.com/lite/ Quote
Stracy Posted July 10, 2007 Author Posted July 10, 2007 I have sucessfully uploaded the etomite files and changing access permissions per their direction, but am stuck at the install program. The install program runs and sees that the correct permissions are 'OK" but if fails to connect to the MYsql database. Any suggestions? I'm not sure there is a field Access hosts. do I need to provide something there on TCH? Steve Yes, just follow their directions on the web site. Quote
TCH-Don Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Did you create the database? Be sure that in MySql you 1 - created the database 2 - created a user 3 -added the user to the database (go back to MySql and find the Add user select the user and database, and then Add user to database) Then to connect to the database in a script use: host: localhost database: yourCpanelName_databaseName user: yourCpanelName_databaseUser password: mypassword * Note password is just as the password, do not add the CpanelName to it. Stracy Posted July 10, 2007 Author Posted July 10, 2007 Thanks! That worked!! I've set the settings as best as I can determine and have entered the Etomite CMS. I can't quite see how to view the existing web pages. It looks like I might have to set a path variable somewhere to the default.html. The current setup looks like I'm creating a new web site from scratch? Will have to start reading the Etomite Users manual. Thanks again Steve Quote
TCH-Don Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 When you go to the folder where you installed you should see a sample site. Quote
Stracy Posted July 15, 2007 Author Posted July 15, 2007 Hi Don. I didn't find any sample site on the installation. I've tried to look at the sourceforge demo site, but can't understand it too well there. I have the overall concept well understood, but navigation is confusing. The problem I'm having now is I want to look at the source of a page and it says it can't be viewed beacuse it hasn't been cached (yet). How do I cache it otr when does it get cached? I'm close to trying CMSmadesimple instead. When you go to the folder where you installed you should see a sample site. Quote
TCH-Don Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 In your admin look at the bottom left and select a page then on the right select edit then on the 3rd tab select publish so that page will be seen in the folder you installed to. On the Etomite there are doc files that will help. Quote
TCH-Don Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Also When you first login to Etomite, you will be taken to the configuration settings. Review these settings and make necessary changes (like “site name”). Use the “Save” button at the top of the page to save the settings, and your Etomite site is ready to launch. This step is a must. Before you “save” your settings for the first time, the settings are NOT in the database at all and your site will note work! You can then launch your site by choosing the “Launch site” link in the “Site” section of the admin menu (top left of screen in manager). Alternatively, you can just point your browser to the URL for your site. Quote
