ace Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 Hello to you electronic experts... I need your help I am new to soldering. I bought a Weller 25 w soldering iron. The first time I plugged it in, it smoked for a while. Is this normal? Also does the iron discolor? (the tip and lower shank) Mine dulled a bit. I want to make sure the iron is working correct before I use it. Thanks for your help. Quote
TCH-Don Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 Just be sure to put a little solder on the tip and let it melt, then wipe it off before using the first time. And wipe it again when each job is done to keep it clean. I use a damp paper towel to wipe it on, just a quick wipe will do. Quote
stevevan Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 already answered above, but I just wanted to add the rules of soldering. The #1 rule in soldering is keep the tip clean. The #2 rule is keep the tip clean. And in case there is any doubt, refer to rule #1. The easiest way is how Don described or you can use an small damp sponge. Good luck and practice makes perfect! ace Posted January 4, 2007 Author Posted January 4, 2007 Thanks so much for all your help. The TCH family is a great place to be. Thanks again.....now where is that soldering iron I know it is around here somewhere.. Hey son come back with that. (son runs off with soldering iron....of course he is only 6 and loves everything electronic & space) Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Just be careful he doesn't grab hold of it when it's hot. It leaves nasty blisters, trust me on this one! Quote
