Hi there,

I am trying to install MovableType on my website, and keep getting the same error that these people were getting. If you read both of the posts, 1 person had David Raynes use their password to install it on their system. The other was told to use the help desk to get a Perl Script installed on the server. Unfortunatelly, I don't see a solution given for either post.

I have tried everything that was tried in the second post (i.e. unzipping files on server, changing permissions, uploading unpacked files... etc...)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Which version/archive of MT are you trying to install? What are the steps you have taken, and in what order (as specific as you can be)? And what error(s) are you getting?

And while I'm thining about it, would you by any chance know what server you're on?

Hi David,

I was hoping as the resident expert on Movable Type that you would answer. So here is what I have done/am doing. I downloaded "MT 2.51 Full" from the web, then via ftp, uploaded it into /public_html then extracted file contents. I then renamed the folder to mt, went in and changed the permissions on all cgi files to 777. Then I edited the .cfg file to reflect my site.

When I tried to initialize Movable Type (http://www.tellthepeople.us/mt/mt-load.cgi), I get the following error:

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@tellthepeople.us and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

These are the DNS pointers I was given, which servers they refer to I don't know.

Thanks for the help.

You are right about the database, but I wouldn't think that it would check that to run mt-check.cgi? Anyway I actually went in and set up a user and database and tried it again, with the same results.

Thanks,

Okay, so how did the files currently in your directory get there? Did you unpack the archive on your home computer and upload the files individually, or did you upload the archive and unpack it through CPanel's file manager?

I tried both methods, I have one directory /mt that I unpacked on the server and the other /movabletype that I uploaded the files individually. I made the same changes to the .cfg file and still get the same error on both.

*************************UH-OH************************

When I ran this on www.tellthepeople.us/movabletype/mt-check.cgi

this time it worked?

I don't know what changed or if I made some kind of stupid error, but it looks like it may be working now.

I went back through all the files and ensured all the permissions were the same and the .cfg file was the same and so far everything checks out.

:P ummmm.... anyway I will repost if I can find the culprit... sorry for wasting your time :P

It certainly wasn't a waste of time. In any software development project, 90% or so of it is just debugging, or other various methods to just get the darn thing to work. :P

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask me or post something there. And please feel free to use as many of my plugins as you can. :P

(And FYI, I think you meant to say that http://www.tellthepeople.us/mt/mt-check.cgi was working, not http://www.tellthepeople.us/movabletype/mt-check.cgi, which is currently giving me a 500 error.)

Happy blogging!

Well... here is the thing. So I deleted the mt directory, and renamed the movabletype directory mt. I ran the mt-check.cgi again and it came back OK. Then following the next step in the MT instructions, I ran mt-load.cgi, this ran fine, and I deleted it like the instructions say to. Then I tried the mt.cgi and I got the old error message, and I get the error message with the mt-check.cgi file too. What the heck am I doing???
