lily Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 I'm maintaining a site someone else built. My site has protected pages with username & password login. In Cpanel, how do I change the passwords on the protected subdirectories? I'd like new ones so my former colleague will not have access anymore. tks for the help Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 Welcome to the forums lily. You select Web Protect in cpanel which will give you a list of folders in your web space. The ones with the locks in front of them are ones you have set user/pass. Select the folder you wish to change and you will see a list of users you have assigned access. Below that you can add a new user or you can enter an existing user and new password and select the change password button. Quote
lily Posted October 13, 2006 Author Posted October 13, 2006 (edited) Thanks for the welcome. I entered the username I wished to change the password on, I entered a new password and clicked "change password". I got the results screen that said password changed. I Checked the site access on another opened browser window and couldn't get in. Got a 401 & a 404 error. Perhaps I didn't use the right button? Should I have used "add/modify existing user"? What's the difference between these 2 buttons? BTW, I've changed the extension on my domain name when I moved the site to TCH. Is this a possible reason for the access problem? TCH-Bruce Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 I am not sure, I never tried it. You could always delete the user and add it back with a new password. Quote
lily Posted October 13, 2006 Author Posted October 13, 2006 I tried deleting the user and readding it with a new password. Still got the same 2 error codes. Any other ideas? Here's the full message: Authorization Required This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password), or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 Sorry, no I don't but you could open a ticket with the help desk and have them take a look at it for you. Unless one of our other users has a clue. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 Ok, I've tested this and it does work. I entered the username and new password and selected the Add/Modify user. The password was changed. If this is not working for you, start a new browser session to test it. If that doesn't work, open a ticket with the help desk as there is something wrong. Quote
lily Posted October 13, 2006 Author Posted October 13, 2006 (edited) Thanks for the ideas. I unknowingly left my prior domain name lapse and have found that changing domain names is really time consuming. Although I've got the page links corrected, I'm still discovering ways this change is impacting my site. I learned a good lesson about keeping on top of things myself and not trusting someone else to take care of it. I tried your suggestion, Bruce, but I still got the same 2 error messages. I opened a ticket at the help desk. Maybe they can see what's wrong. Edited October 13, 2006 by lily Quote
