I have given out my email to hundreds of companies over the years, and now I find that I am getting about 250-300 emails a day. So I heard a great idea. If you have your own domain, give out the address as a unique email for them, so you can see who is selling your name. For example, I go to xyz magazine and register and they want an email address, so I give them xyzmag@****. Then I have all emails that do not have a real email box, go to the default email address. When I want to block someone, I setup a filter for that address like fastcomputers@**** --> Discard. Then they lose the right to send me emails. So I go set this up, and I want to tell everyone that my old address myname@**** is no longer working and call me for an update. I use an autoresponder for this. (Which is also supposed to send the email to discard). But what I am finding is that the email is not getting discarded all the time. So I set a filter so that myname@**** --> discard. Now the autoresponder does not work. What order does the Filter, autoresponder, and default email routing process the incoming email? If you can see another prefered way to do this let me know.

Thanks for the help.

After posting I see that email addresses are *'d out. what the above stars should say is "mydomain" (used for example)

I don't know what order they use but what you are doing is what I do with one exception. I do not let all email to my domain get to me. How do I do this?

1 - as you I give out addresses like xyzmag@myTCHdomain.ext

2 - I create a forward for xyzmag@myTCHdomain.ext to my-real-address@myTCHdomain.ext

3 - when I start getting email from said address from someone other than where I used it I know it has been sold and delete the forward. No more email to that address

I use autoresponders once in a while but only for valid email accounts I have created.

I have my default address in cPanel set to :fail:

O.K. I can try that. I did want people to get an autoreply so they know that my old address was not getting read, and they can contact me if they want a new one, but I guess I could just remove it. I am amazed at how many place sell your email address.
