I'm in the process of developing a new website and will do the majority of it live on a domain. My question is, how do I prevent the site from "going live" while it's still in development? Can I just passsword protect the public_html folder? Or is there another way?

Thanks!

Put up an "Updating" index.html page with no links to anywhere else on the site. Rename the index file for the site something else to test like index_new.html.

After you get your site established, however, don't use this trick because the search engines will come by, see the pages are gone, and possibly remove you from the listings. (And for anyone else reading this considering a "temporary updating page").
