I upgraded my Xoops site today and since then all images disappeared from the server with no reason. I also made a full backup before that and I would like to know if there is a way to upload jpg files only.

It sounds like it could have something to do with the paths of your images. Check the HTML to see that the path is pointing to the correct folders.

That would be my first thing to check

No all jpg files located in folders with permissions set to 777 have been deleted. I checked that with my ftp program. The jpg files have been deleted from the whole domain and subdomains not only the xoops section I worked on.

Well you could upload them just like you would any other files with an FTP program but I would open a ticket with the help desk and have them look at your account and make sure nothing else is wrong.

I did contact the help desk and they helped me to fix the problem. They didn't tell me much other than the files had changed ownership to nobody and I had to upload them back on the server. They probably have a lot to do and I didn't want to ask too many questions but if anyone had the same problem I would like to know what I could have done wrong or what could have done that.

Thank you for your answers.
