The files Micro$oft update leaves hanging in the Windows folder (files beginning with $NtUninstall....) how long do you need to keep those? Are they safe to delete?

I only have 14% od free space on my "C" partition and the Defrag utility says you should have 15% each time I run it.

Those uninstall files are eating up over 190MB of disk space. It's doubtful that you would ever uninstall a hot patch after a while so how long should they be kept?

Bruce, I forget the specifics but for Windows ME there was an update that I had a conflict with either a program or piece of hardware and the fix was to uninstall just that particular update. I remember at the time it was a real pain for me because each time I visited the Update site it wanted to install it again and I would always forget and "do as I was told"

Anyway, I would suspect that if there were any other conflicts you would have found them by now so getting rid of those would be OK...BUT...they are a part of Windows and sometimes taking out little pieces tends to break other pieces.

I would look for an alternate solution, are there any other files you can do without? It sounds like a HD upgrade is needed, There are lots of sales out there for large drives. And if you are tight on space now, purging those temp files will only be a temp solution. Once you start running low, you will run low again in a short period of time.

Go for another drive :D

Bob, I had a problem with one of the hotfixes too but that was long ago and been resolved. You are right that I don't have any issues (at the moment).

I've purged and moved everything I can move to my D partition.

I have plenty of space on another partition and I've moved everything I can move. Guess Rob's solution to get a copy of partition magic and resize my C drive partition would be the best option.

Gotta love Sony throwing in a 160GB hard drive and partitioning a 16GB C drive and the remainder to D with the exception of their recovery partition.

We all know when you install a piece of software everyone wants to write into the Windows folder (DLL's INI and other misc files) regardless of where the application is installed. Thus the lack of space on the C partition.

16GB is too small, wow. I remember my first hard drive I put in our IBM XT's, it was 10MB and I thought I would never be able to fill it up. Of course it originally only had an A and B drive which were 5 1/4" floppies and held a whopping 360kb. The DOS OS fit on one floppy and was always in the A drive and data was put on the B drive. Those were the days.

Yeah, Rob's suggestion of enlarging the partition with Partition Magic would be your best bet. Sounds strange that Sony would split that HD into three partitions and leave the C as the smaller partitions. But PM is a great program and makes the task very simple.

I don't know why Sony does it either. This is the second Sony I've bought and they both have a 16GB C partition. The Sony laptop had a larger C partition than the two desktops did. Strange indeed.

The machine is over a year old. Maybe they have changed their ways since.

I'll get a copy of PM and expand it.

I loaded a copy of partition magic last night and ran it. Now I have a 40GB C partition with 71% free and a 100GB D partition with 70% free.

Thanks for the suggestion.
