r32chaos
Hello everyone! I have a linksys wireless broadband router to which I connected the printer. Printer did not originally have wireless capabilities so I attached a small router to it. A network cable runs from the printer's small router and connects to a linksys wireless broadband router. Internet is also connected to this wireless broadband router. Here is the problem; two laptops instantly recognized the wireless connections from the linksys wireless broadband routher and I was on the internet on both laptops...they could even see each other where I could network them to each other via this wireless router. However, the printer is not being shown in these laptops so that I could install it to these laptops. I guess I am having serious trouble trying to map to/or find this printer so that I can install it and use it wirelessly from any one of these laptops. If the laptops are finding the wireless broadband router and hence connecting to the internet, why can they not find or locate that printer which is connected to the router also? this despite the fact that the light on the router indicates that printer is indeed connected to it.... What should the normal procedure be? printer is not connected to a server, just directly to this wireless broadband router...this wireless router was tried while it was non-secure (factory defaults) and then I made it secure with a WEP # and successfully connected to the internet but in both cases (secure and insecure) still cannot map to/install/find this printer...what to do? Your help will be very much appreciated!!! Thank you!
stevevan
First of all, welcome to the forums. Now for a little terminology. What it sounds like you have connected to the printer is a wireless print server...not a router. A router does just what the name implies - it routes. The printer needs to be connected to something that "serves" it the data to print. I don't have a wireless print server, so I'm just guessing from this point. Others will chime in shortly if I'm wrong. You should be able to go to the wireless router configuration and set it up just like you did for the laptops to accept the printer to the network. Then, I'm assuming that there will need to be some type of network configuration setup on the printer server too. Once everything is in sync, then the router should treat the print server kinda like a computer connection. That is, has an IP address assigned to it. Then on your computers, simply set up a printer to print to the IP address you assigned. Hope this helps some!
Madmanmcp
Just agreeing with Steve here. You either connect a printer to a networked computer and "share" it, or you connect the printer to a network "server" component connected to the network. If you have the printer connected to a wireless "router" it will not work, you need it connected to a wireless "Print Server". You will also need to follow the directions to configure the print server to recognise and share the printer across the network. You will also probably have to load the printer drivers on each computer.

r32chaos
Welcome to the forum, r32chaos. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Thanks to everyone for welcoming me to the forum; Thomas, Don, David, Madmanmcp, and Steve... I also appreciate the responses for my solution to the printer problem. I guess you are right, the little piece attached to the back of the printer which is plugged into where the parallel port is located, must be the print server. This little box is also powered seperately and has a light on, indicating that it is powered on. The network cable travels from this to the Linksys wireless broadband router and I guess I have to somehow tell this Linksys router to recognize this print server...that is the part where I am not sure how to proceed. I dont seem to be able to locate the documentation for the print server but I imagine I could call their tech support and get somewhere with it. I think after that I would simply install that printer for which I already know the drivers are readily available in XP Pro. So the problem must be to connect into the print server and to configure it somehow...in the same manner as when I had to connect via a network cable directly into the broadband wireless router in order to set the WEP security etc...I guess that might be accomplished by running the network cable from the print server directly to one of the computers/notebooks, right? This is where I am requesting some more input, please... Again, I appreciate your responses and everyone's courtesy! Thank you... TCH-Don
I would go to the web site for the print server and see if you can find the documentation there.
Madmanmcp
Martin, it now sounds like you have a mini Print Server which attaches to the parallel printer port and has an ethernet WIRED connection port which allows it to be connected to your router and be shared by all computers on your network. You need to find some directions somewhere to help you run the setup process on this print server so the router will be able to recognize it and allow it to be used by the rest of the network. If you do not have these directions the best place to start is the company that made it. Check there and good luck.

r32chaos
THANK YOU EVERYONE!!! The printer server was setup successfully by going to NetGear website and downloading the owners manual in PDF format as well as the software necessary... It is working great and I REALLY appreciate all of your's courtesy and passion of helping others!!! Sincerely, Martin
