Springfire Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 (edited) Edit: I don't know that I am putting this in the right forum or not......... My brain hurts from trying to get my boards upgraded for the past 8 days... I really scrambled things on my first attempt.. managed to get restored from my back up...After trying to do a patch only upgrade(didn't work- even following the directions from phpbb.org), tried to do a patch thru my nuke 7.5 with instructions again didn't work.. then tried to just upgrade to 7.7... (you can imagine lots of screaming here). Put in a help ticket to the friendly handy dandy tech support... and managed to get the files restored from my back up... Ok so now.. have upgraded to nuke 7.7 with no problems however I discovered that the boards with that are 2.0.14 (starting to scream again)... I don't know what to try now to get to 2.0.17.. If I try the patch again.. (file from phpbb.org) the instructions say.. "7.iii. Patch file The patch file is probably the best solution for those with many Mods or other changes who do not want to re-add them back to all the changed files. To use this you will need command line access to a standard UNIX type patch application. A number of patch files are provided to allow you to upgrade from previous stable releases. Select the correct patch, e.g. if your current version is 2.0.16 you need the phpBB-2.0.16_to_2.0.17.patch. Place the correct patch in the parent directory containing the phpBB 2 core files (i.e. index.php, viewforum.php, etc.). With this done you should run the following command: patch -cl -d [phpBB DIRECTORY] -p1 < [PATCH NAME] (where PHPBB DIRECTORY is the directory name your phpBB Installation resides in, for example phpBB2, and where PATCH NAME is the relevant filename of the selected patch file). This should complete quickly, hopefully without any HUNK FAILED comments." So.. #1.. Can "I" do this myself? the standard UNIX type patch application part is what I am questioning.... Did I get the right patch files from phpbb.org? #2. If I can do this.. where am I supposed to do the "run" command at? in a web browser with my site name and the file location? I am just kinda stuck and don't know what to do next... any help would be great Edited September 7, 2005 by Springfire Quote
cajunman4life Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Hmm... sounds like a real predicament. I found out the hard way how not to upgrade a forum lol. Ok, so let's start with the basics. You are using phpbb. Do you have a lot of mods installed? If you don't know, then you more than likely don't. That will make it easy. You'll want to download the "changed files only" package from phpBB.com (I recommend the "zip" version found at http://www.phpbb.com/downloads.php ). Open that in WinZip (or 7Zip or any other zip program) and you'll see another zip archive inside that should say something like "2.0.14_to_2.0.17.zip" (don't quote me on that, it's been a while). Double click that file to open it. Unzip all files inside that to an empty directory on your computer. Now open your favorite FTP program and upload all files in that directory to their corresponding location on your server. Now, you'll want to find a file call "update_to_latest.php" (again, don't quote me on the exact filename) and I think it should be in the first zip archive you downloaded. Unzip that and upload it to the base directory on your server (if your forums are installed at http://www.mytchdomain.com/forums, then you would upload it to the public_html/forums directory). Then, run the file by doing "http://www.mytchdomain.com/forums/update_to_latest.php" (change to fit your exact setup). BUT FIRST - make sure you back up your forum database through cpanel first (I usually also take a full backup just before uploading the new files, just an idea). Now, after running that script it should either tell you everything is fine and dandy, or it ran into problems. Usually everything will turn out fine and dandy, and viola, you have the latest and greatest version of phpBB! Now, let me know if this won't work, or you need further assistance in this matter. stevevan Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Thanks for the "tutorial", Aaron. Sounds like you hit it on the head. If you need more help springfire, just ask! Quote
Springfire Posted September 7, 2005 Author Posted September 7, 2005 thanks for the small ray of hope .. I do have a few mods for the nuke installed.. I remember seeing something about going back to subsilver before upgrading... does this apply to the php-nuke stuff as well? my boards are at czpkc.com/Boards2/index.php if you want to take a look.. Quote
cajunman4life Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Ohh!!! I forgot that! Yes you must go back to subsilver before upgrading! *doh*. Thanks for pointing that out Springfire. See, not even a know-it-all knows it all lol. As far as working with php-nuke, I'm not sure as I've never worked with it (only CMS I have remotely any experience with is php-fusion). I would imagine this shouldn't cause a problem, though I'm not 100% sure so don't "shoot the messenger" so to speak. Let us know if this works out for you. Quote
Springfire Posted September 7, 2005 Author Posted September 7, 2005 LOL okies... np.. now I just need to remember how to change back to subsilver.... hmmmmmmmmmmm Quote
Springfire Posted September 7, 2005 Author Posted September 7, 2005 hmmm all the defaults are still set at subsilver.. ok. time to dig out the nuke files again Quote
Springfire Posted September 7, 2005 Author Posted September 7, 2005 AH Ha found it good ole preferences Quote
Springfire Posted September 7, 2005 Author Posted September 7, 2005 ok.. have the files, unzipped the main file, the following folders are--cache, contrib, docs, install.. and the other zips. Unzipped the 2.0.14-2.0.17 zip and the following folders are --admin,db,includes,language,templates, and some other files.. The only "update_to_latest.php" that I see is in the Install folder in the first level unzip. So I need to put the 2nd lvl unzipped files into my Boards2 directory Correct? and then put the "update_to_latest.php" in the Boards2 directory as well and run it thru a web browser . Correct? (Just don't need to mess it up again, I too have learn how not to upgrade boards LOL) Quote
cajunman4life Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Let us know how it goes Springfire Quote
cajunman4life Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Hmm... seems I posted and just missed your post... ok well I'm not sure the directory structure of the nuke install, but basically upload those folders & files (along with update_to_latest.php) to the directory that the phpbb installation is located, and go from there. Quote
Springfire Posted September 7, 2005 Author Posted September 7, 2005 (edited) np.. ok just wanted to make sure because a few of the new folders will overwrite some current folders..... uploading away Oooooo ok... for future reference... look in the new folders and just move the files inside to the current matching folders on the directory.. Aaron, we should take all this and condense for a new tutorial on upgrading nuke stuff LOL... Edited September 7, 2005 by Springfire Quote
cajunman4life Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Indeed, it could be a customer-written tutorial. You know, just checking out the php-nuke site, I'm not sure if what we're doing here will work, but it's certainly worth a try. I've never let a "you can't do that!" stop me lol. Quote
Springfire Posted September 7, 2005 Author Posted September 7, 2005 LOL I hear that... ya I have been scouring the nuke sites.. and have seen so many things, think that is how I got things messed up... Quote

cajunman4life Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Hmm, it seems I forgot to mention that "update_to_latest.php" needs to go in the "install" directory (which should not exist, so you'll need to create it). It's proper location should be /public_html/your_forum_directory_path/install and can be accessed by http://www.yourtchdomain.com/forum_directo...e_to_latest.php. Quote
Springfire Posted September 7, 2005 Author Posted September 7, 2005 (edited) cripes... I remember seeing that somewhere duh on my part.. hmmm do all the files in the Install folder need to be moved as well or just the one file? What do you think? Edited September 7, 2005 by Springfire Quote
cajunman4life Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 What do you mean moved? Technically speaking, for security purposes, an "install" directory shouldn't even exist on your server (otherwise anybody could come by and wipe out your installation with minimal problems). You should have to create the "install" directory on the server (in your forum directory) and upload "update_to_latest.php" to it. That should really be the only thing in your install directory (and you will delete the directory and all it's contents after running the update). Quote
Springfire Posted September 7, 2005 Author Posted September 7, 2005 Right... I did make the Install folder because it didn't exist... just want to make sure the only file I need to put in it is the "update_to_latest.php".. Quote
Springfire Posted September 7, 2005 Author Posted September 7, 2005 ok... that didn't work either but on the bright side the boards are still there... Ok.. hmmmm Quote
cajunman4life Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Yes that should be the only file you need in there. Quote
Springfire Posted September 7, 2005 Author Posted September 7, 2005 hmm ok going to try something... went and was looking at the nuke resources site.. attempting the nuke 7.7 patched files Quote

I really need to learn how to restore a certian folder from an entire site back up.. Edited September 7, 2005 by Springfire Quote

Tommy Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 (edited) FYI - you can do the file updates but you need to do the sql change to make it show.. Yes I have for a few years ... Go to NukeCode.com and go to their download section and they have the files modded there. I usually do it by hand by going to NukeFixes.com -- click on the fixes up top and it will show you what files to edit... Let me know if you need help - I will be on the road for the next few days.
