OnlineAutorama Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 I'm not sure how but somehow I got onto a Chinese mailing list. Using Outlook I've tried blocking the sender, the domain ect but i still keep receiving spam,... you know how it is with spammers. But anyway, When i receive their emails they always have these in them which I'm sure means something but my email program just hasnt converted it to english. My question, How do i block all emails with this symbol in them? I dont even want to allow them to get thru to me. Is there away to have this email just bounce back to them so i dont even get it? Here's an example of the subject of the emails. 瘆碞琌暗ぃ幢暗ㄆ I'm in the cPanel right now and I've added the filter to block emails that contain "Filter - Subject - that Contain - Destination = Discard" in the subject and saved it but the filter now says it's blocking ö and not . Also do i need to add the email addresses after the word Discard that i want this symbol blocked and not sent to? So whats the Best Way to Block these emails from ever being received? Thank you. Jim. OnlineAutorama Posted August 17, 2005 Author Posted August 17, 2005 I dunno,.. thats why i'm asking. Should i be using Spam Assasin instead? What about using Spam Assasin? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 You will get rid of much spam if you use it. In spamassassin section in cpanel, enable spamassassin and disable or enable spam box. If spam box is enabled, a spam folder will be set up automatically (accessible from Horde I think) which will store all emails marked as spam by spamassassin so you can check them. If disabled, these emails will not be stored in the spam folder. Quote
OnlineAutorama Posted August 17, 2005 Author Posted August 17, 2005 Hmm,.. So do i just tell it to block all emails with in the subject? TCH-Thomas Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 I would personally just enable spamassassin with its default settings (catching most suspicious emails) and see if it takes care of it. If you rewrite its rules etc, it would probably mark every email which may contain a "?" in the subject etc as spam. Which may lead to innocent emails being marked too. Quote
TweezerMan Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 You can't block the spam by configuring a filter to block "?" characters. These e-mails contain characters from another character set which don't have an equivalent character in the character set you're using on your machine. Your browser / e-mail program automatically displays these characters that don't have equivalents as "?" characters, but the characters in the original e-mail are unchanged. An e-mail filter would see the actual characters in the e-mail, not the"?" characters that you see. I don't know if this is even possible in SpamAssassin, but I think what you'd need here is a filter that would block based on the character set of the message. Quote
OnlineAutorama Posted August 18, 2005 Author Posted August 18, 2005 Do you guys see that symbol as a "?" and not a "square"? Just wondering. Quote
TCH-Andy Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 That depends on your computer setup. I have Chinese fonts setup on my computer, so I see the Chinese characters. If you do not have a suitable character set on your computer, you will probably see a mix of squares and ? Quote
OnlineAutorama Posted August 18, 2005 Author Posted August 18, 2005 I'm gonna go with what Thomas says. He seems to be the man and has helped me greatly in the past. Thanks Guys.
