androoze Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Hey all!!! (I apologize in advance for the lengthy post ) I've had a Dell Inspiron 2200 for 3 months now (it's been working great!). I recently did some diagnostic testing and an error was found (code: 1000-0146, apparently means that an error log was found). I did the diag testing initially because, as I was installing a web-cam, I got a blue error screen stating that a fatal error has occurred and the system must be shut down to prevent system damage(at the bottom it said something about a memory dump!?!). I rebooted and kept getting the same blue error screen, so i rebooted once more in safe mode and removed the web-cam's drivers. It then booted up properly, but a window popped up stating that the system recovered from a fatal error. I called up Dell tech. and was told that they would have to send me a new HD. My system seems to be working fine now, but the tech told me that there may be future problems if I don't replace the HD. The new HD will be here in 2 days. I really don't know if the web-cam had anything to do with this issue. I am also a bit reluctant to change out the HD due to the fact that it seems to be working fine, I have a lot of stuff on it already, and I've also read in other forums and such that Dell may send me a refurbished HD! I would really appreciate anyone's input or suggestions on what I should do!!! Thanks a bunch, Aaron Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Welcome to the forums Aaron I had a similar situation after purchasing a new Dell Inspiron laptop. Dell wanted me to replace the drive but I decided since it was working I would test my fate. To date the drive has not failed. That's been 10 months now. They did send me a new HD and not refirbished but it's not unheard of. Ultimately, the choice is yours what you decide to do. Good luck! Quote
androoze Posted August 15, 2005 Author Posted August 15, 2005 Thanks for the help and the quick response Bruce and the friendly welcome everyone! I think that I just may keep the existing drive in and store the new one that is being sent. However, I do have a few concerns about this; 1) Is it at all possible to further damage any other component of my system due to the fact that it uses a damaged drive? 2) What types of problems may arise if I continue to use the damaged drive? Bruce, you mentioned that you had the same problem and you kept the drive in; when you run diag tests do you still get the error? Also, are there any mentionable problems with the system that you've encountered due to the fact you're using a damaged drive?? Thanks again for the help!!!!!! Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 1) Is it at all possible to further damage any other component of my system due to the fact that it uses a damaged drive? I suppose that anything is possible, but not likely. 2) What types of problems may arise if I continue to use the damaged drive?Only problem I see is loss of data. Make good backups. Bruce, you mentioned that you had the same problem and you kept the drive in; when you run diag tests do you still get the error? Also, are there any mentionable problems with the system that you've encountered due to the fact you're using a damaged drive?? In my opinion the drive was not damaged. It passes all their diagnostic tests since the first fail. I've encountered no problems at all since the first occurrence. Quote
androoze Posted August 15, 2005 Author Posted August 15, 2005 Thanks again for the help! You guy are great! Oh, about the refurbished issue; It was really bothering me so I called Dell up again and asked them if the drive they were sending me was in fact refurbished. He told me that yes it is refurbished. He than explained to me that they must label it as 'refurbished' because they open the box and test the HD before it is sent to me, to ensure that it is defect free. By testing the HD and opening the box before it reaches the consumer, they must label it as refurbished. Just thought I'd pass that on! Quote
