Hmmm.

Most of IE's biggest improvements, though, are in security.
 Sorry, that just tickles my giggle spot. Using Microsoft products and "security" in the same sentence.
Nonetheless, IE remains a frequent target for hackers given its widespread use, and Microsoft regularly issues new warnings and fixes for various vulnerabilities that might otherwise open the door to malicious programs like spyware.
Widespread use and wide-spread security holes. It is good they patch it often but it's equally bad that they have to do so.
IE 7 requires Windows XP with Service Pack 2
Aha! It's a marketing ploy to get poor unknowledgable folks who are perfectly happy to upgrade their OS. (1/2 :tchrocks:)

Well, IE may be catching up but as far as I see it, they're still 2 laps back - will they have the endurance to win the race?

Unfortunately, they have the market share because of Window's overwhelming presence and being packaged with it. Too many folks are scared of Firefox and pals and are willing to stick with this "cuz it came with the computer -- it must be ok." With car parts, for example, pretty much everyone would agree that from-the-factory parts are best, especially when trying to keep your warranty good. With computers, from-the-factory isn't always the best.

Yes! Excellent point Bruce. That is a huge problem that is preventing the standards from going fully into effect and making site designers/programmers crazy... trying to accomodate their broken CSS standard.

I've given up on trying to satisfy IE needs. I test my pages in FF. If they work I consider them done. For the most part they look similar in IE and that's good enough for me.
