WordPress tells me that if I want to use Permalinks, I have to change the permissions on my .htaccess file to 777, so it can write the rules that allow the permalinks to work correctly.

Here is what I don't understand: Do I have to leave the permissions at 777, or can I switch them back to 644 once the change has been made? Isn't there a pretty big security risk if I leave my permissions at 777?

Actually, the permission is supposed to be 666 not 777.

Does anybody know if the permalinks will continue to be created and work correctly if I switch the permissions back to 644?
