3rd Party Installers

Hi,

 

I intend to have some web applications installed by a 3rd party. Is there anything I need to do (or be aware of) before giving the go-ahead?

It all depends on what the application is, and how much you trust the people doing it.

 

Generally, I would set up an FTP account for them, which gives access to the folder they need only. After they have installed it, I would change the password on the FTP account.

The application is an autoresponder (email and RSS feed). The installer would be either the seller or a third party.

 

Can you tell me how to set up the ftp account and limit access to a single folder? This is all new to me, so a step-by-step guide would be a great help.

 

By the way, how can I determine which folder they need to access?

You need to decide what folder the app will be installed in.

Goto cpanel > ftp manage accounts

click on [ Add FTP Account ]

add a login name and password

change the Directory: to what folder you want.

Now they will only have access to that folder and below if they create more folders below.

Hi Michael,

 

You can generally install them in any directory.

 

A directory is another name for a folder, the same as you have on your computer at home.

 

I would just create one called "autoresp" or something similar - and they should be able to set it up in that. They will probably ask you to set up a forward for the email in your cpanel. Just ask them for the exact command you need, and then it should be fairly straightforward in the email section to add that as a forward.

It's too bad cpanel and files aren't designed to look and feel a bit more like the familiar computers we already own.

 

I think it would make the transition a lot easier for us non-techies. But then again, I've already shown how little I know.
